French lawmakers approved a tax of €0.055 (5.5 cents) for every gigabyte of data that companies like Netflix and YouTube send to French users. It’s a tax on the companies, not users directly, but the cost could get passed on to subscribers. The vote was 11 to 10, with only 35 of 577 lawmakers present. Supporters say it could raise up to €10 billion a year. The French government opposed it, warning it would hit smaller French companies hardest; VLC says it would cost it over €1 million a year.

‘I Have a Better Idea’: Sanders Pitches Alternative to AI Data Centers He Says 66% of Americans Oppose. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has criticized the growing AI data center boom, arguing that the U.S. should prioritize affordable housing, hospitals, schools and childcare centers instead of expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure. Sanders Challenges AI Data Center Expansion On Sunday, Sanders took to X to criticize the expansion of AI data centers, citing public opposition to their construction and proposing an alternative investment strategy. “Instead of building more AI data centers, which 66% of Americans oppose, I have a better idea,” he wrote. He suggested that the country should focus on addressing its housing shortage by building “7 million affordable homes & apartments.” Sanders also called for greater investment in essential public infrastructure, including “more hospitals, schools & childcare centers.” “Let’s create an economy that works for all, not just the top 1 percent,” he added. Sen. Bernie Sanders @SenSanders Instead of building more AI data centers, which 66% of Americans oppose, I have a better idea. Let’s build 7 million affordable homes & apartments. Let’s build more hospitals, schools & childcare centers. Let’s create an economy that works for all, not just the top 1 percent. Nov 01, 2026 Growing Concerns Over AI Data Center Expansion Last month, “Shark Tank” investor Kevin O’Leary warned that 65% of announced AI data center projects might never be built because of power shortage s, water constraints, connectivity issues and political opposition. However, he expected demand for computing capacity to triple by the fourth quarter of 2027. In August, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) warned that data center expansion was placing environmental and infrastructure burdens on local communities. He proposed a Data Center Bill of Rights that would allow residents to oppose projects and restrict construction in residential areas and farmland. He also accused companies of shifting electricity, water and infrastructure costs to ordinary ratepayers. In June, billionaire investor Mark Cuban argued that opposition to AI data centers reflected broader concerns about job displacement and wealth concentration . He said AI companies had “lost the PR battle” by failing to address public concerns and urged them to support communities facing potential automation-related job losses. Musk Flagged AI Data Center Challenges In October, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. SPCX CEO Elon Musk said demand for AI data centers remained strong but warned that securing funding did not guarantee successful construction and operation, citing the complex power, cooling and networking requirements. His remarks came as investors raised concerns about rising borrowing costs and returns on AI infrastructure investments.
Gary Black Says Tesla Is Losing EV Share to ‘No-Name’ Rivals Despite ‘Huge First-Mover Advantage’—Warns TSLA Needs Better Marketing. Investor Gary Black of The Future Fund LLC said on Saturday that Elon Musk -led automaker Tesla Inc. TSLA is losing its dominance of the U.S. EV market to its competitors, reiterating calls for a stronger marketing and communications strategy. Tesla’s Market Share Decline Does Not Justify High Valuation The investor took to X, responding to user @TheTeslaBull, who was replying to an earlier post by Black warning Tesla supporters not to underestimate Chinese automakers . The user asked the investor to name good EVs that were on sale in the U.S. besides Tesla vehicles. Black said that it was not “the relevant question,” instead asking, “how does TSLA stop its EV US share decline,” which was at 80% since 2020 to roughly 52% today, “to justify its 200x+ P/E multiple when U.S. EV share keeps declining?” He asked. The investor then pointed to automakers like Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd. HYMLF , Toyota Motor Corp TM , as well as General Motors Co . GM , Ford Motor Co . F and Rivian Automotive Inc. RIVN being among the biggest gainers in the segment. Gary Black @garyblack00 That’s not the relevant question. The relevant question is how does TSLA stop its EV US share decline (from 80% in 2020 to 52% today) to justify its 200x+ P/E multiple when U.S. EV share keeps declining? Biggest gainers: Hyundai loniq 5 Toyota bz Chevrolet Equinox EV… Oct 31, 2026 Tesla Losing Market Share to ‘No-Name’ Companies, Says Gary Black The investor expanded upon his views on Tesla’s market share in the same thread, saying that despite its “huge first movers’ advantage and a huge cost/scale advantage,” Tesla was losing its command over the sector to “no-name manufacturers with no brand equity in EVs.” Black added that if companies like Hyundai and Honda Motor Co. Ltd. HMC gain EV market share, Tesla’s position at the top becomes threatened. “Absent proactive marketing, this deterioration in share will continue, which makes it impossible mathematically to justify TSLA’s multiple,” the investor said. The investor then lamented Tesla bulls’ rigid views. “They just don’t get the relationship between volume growth and P/E [Price-Earnings ratio],” Black said. Gary Black @garyblack00 My point is that even with a huge first movers’ advantage and a huge cost/scale advantage, TSLA is losing EV share in the U.S. to no-name manufacturers with no brand equity in EVs.. If Hyundai, Honda, and Kia can gain EV share, TSLA will continue to lose share as others enter… Oct 31, 2026 Rivian CEO Says Autonomy Will Drive Market Share Rivian Automotive Inc. RIVN CEO RJ Scaringe said that while autonomous driving technology does not constitute a major part of the customers’ purchase decision at present, the technology will represent “a big shift in the overall topology of the auto industry” and that it would become a “big driver of market share.” Rivian also said that it plans to introduce Level 4 autonomous driving technology on its vehicles by 2028, touting its Point to Point Supervised self-driving service. Jim Farley’s Touts Ford Fathom Ford Motor Co . F CEO, during the automaker’s Q3 2026 earnings call last week, said that the upcoming Fathom all-electric pickup truck , set to be offered at a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $28,350, exceeded his expectations. The CEO also touted the pickup truck having the ability to power owners’ homes without the need for a wall-mounted inverter unit with the pickup truck through its bidirectional power flow technology . Price Action: TSLA shares were up 0.22% to $400.67 during overnight trading.

Markets hope for relief in Apple margins. A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Wayne Cole. It's been a calmer start in Asia as Nasdaq futures bounce modestly after last week's drubbing and oil prices ease. It could be investors are hoping for some earnings relief from Apple AAPL later today given it isn't spending mountains of cash on data centres. Analysts forecast revenue of around $113 billion, up 11% on the year before, with earnings per share at $2.00. One focus will be profit margins, given the company is facing rising costs for equipment, particularly chips and memory. Gross margins are seen between 47% and 48%, which would be astounding for any other company. Investors will also be hungry for guidance on how iPhone 18 sales are going with pre-orders having begun in mid-October. Apple's shares have been something of a haven of stability having risen for four straight months and are up 27% so far this year, pushing its valuation past $5 trillion. More challenging for the mood will be results from AMD AMD later in the week given it slid almost 11% last Friday as Intel INTC.O shed 28% on a disappointing outlook. The US midterms are an added wrinkle as a Democratic win could result in more political opposition to data centres and calls for controls on AI in general. Prediction markets have the Democrats winning the house, but are less certain on the Senate where there are some very close calls. There is likely to be a bitter fight over spending authority and raising the debt limit, with government borrowing in the frame as Treasury announces its quarterly refunding this week. While oil prices are down almost 3% so far today, it isn't entirely clear why. Talks are continuing between Iranian and Qatari mediators, but that hasn't stopped tankers being attacked in the Gulf. There are also plenty of reports the US has been telling allies in the Middle East to expect a renewed strike on Iran once the midterms are over. That may be why Brent futures are still above $100 a barrel out to April. Key developments that could influence markets on Monday: - German retail sales for September, EU PMIs for October, US ISM for October and construction spending for September - Appearances by ECB Vice-President Boris Vujcic, ECB policymakers Jose Luis Escriva and Olivier Moulin, Bank of Spain governor Jose Luis Escriva and Bank of France governor Emmanuel Moulin - Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago President Austan Goolsbee moderates a discussion
