Apple’s Hidden Google Problem Could Cost It Billions. Never say Apple Inc AAPL is losing money. This is a notional, opportunity loss. • Apple shares are experiencing downward pressure. What’s driving AAPL stock lower? Google’s Loss Also Apple’s Loss? Apple doesn’t say how much Google parent Alphabet Inc GOOG GOOGL pays it to be the default search engine on iPhones. But Alphabet’s latest earnings just offered a clue, and it isn’t the one Apple investors would want. Google’s search revenue grew 12% in the third quarter, down from 19.1% in the first quarter and 16.8% in the second. Apple’s cut is tied to that money. Apple’s filings acknowledge that it earns revenue from Google for search placement, but the company has never disclosed how much. The only hard figure comes from the Justice Department’s antitrust case against Google. Court documents, unsealed in 2024 despite both companies’ efforts to keep them private, showed Google paid Apple $20 billion in 2022. Testimony in the same case indicated Apple receives 36% of the search ad revenue Google earns through Safari. Neither company has disclosed a more recent figure. Apple’s check is very likely still growing; Google’s payments to its partners rose 10% last quarter. What’s at risk is how fast it grows. In estimation, scaling that 2022 figure in line with Google’s search growth since then, the slowdown puts roughly $2.2 billion a year of Apple’s growth at stake compared with Google’s pace earlier this year. Allies and Enemies Like some other technology giants, Apple and Alphabet are both allies and enemies, with the two companies competing against each other in several fields and, as shown above, relying on each other in some aspects. The Alphabet partnership has helped Apple grow its Services revenue and also shows how important its growing iPhone user base has been in recent years. The Department of Justice fought against the Google and Apple deal recently, but ultimately a judge ruled that it could remain in place. Alphabet and Apple have also since added to their working relationship with an AI deal announced earlier this year. Apple announced Google’s Gemini will help power Siri and Apple’s AI Apple Intelligence platform. The deal is worth a reported $1 billion annually. For Apple and Google moving forward, both companies may win more users who are using products from both companies.

EXCLUSIVE: AI Bubble Risk Is Low, but SMH Faces a Bigger Threat Than QQQ, Expert Warns. The risk of an artificial intelligence bubble bursting remains relatively low, but investors could be overlooking significant concentration risks in some of the most popular semiconductor ETFs , according to Tal Schwartz , founder of Ai Funds . The firm’s recently unveiled AI Bubble Pop Index currently scores the risk at just 3 out of 20, based on Oct. 2 readings. However, Schwartz cautions that the index measures the broader market, not individual sectors. “It doesn’t score sectors, so a low reading isn’t a clean bill of health for any of them,” he told Benzinga . Nvidia Exposure Separates the Riskiest AI ETFs Among major AI-related ETFs, the VanEck Semiconductor ETF SMH appears particularly vulnerable. When asked which, among the major ETFs investors use to play the AI theme, has the greatest vulnerability to an AI spending slowdown, Schwartz opined that it was SMH, due to its concentration. Nvidia Corp NVDA accounts for approximately 21% of its portfolio, while its top 10 holdings represent 69% of assets, according to Morningstar data. By comparison, the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF AIQ holds approximately 90 stocks, with its top 10 accounting for around 33% and Nvidia representing less than 3%. “The more a fund depends on one group of customers’ spending, the more a capex slowdown could hurt it,” Schwartz said. The iShares Semiconductor ETF SOXX also carries semiconductor exposure but is more evenly distributed, with Nvidia accounting for approximately 8%. AI Spending Slowdown Could Hit Chipmakers Hard A hypothetical 20% reduction in hyperscaler AI infrastructure spending over the next 12 months could put chip equipment makers, memory manufacturers, AI accelerators and networking suppliers under pressure. “The suppliers whose revenue is that spending: chip equipment makers, memory, AI accelerators and networking, plus the optical and power names common in thematic funds. These companies carry high fixed costs, so a revenue dip tends to hit earnings harder, and their valuations assume years of growth," Schwartz explained. “In the 2022 chip downturn, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 45% from its January high to its October low. The twist is that the hyperscalers themselves could hold up better, because spending less lifts their free cash flow,” he added, illustrating the sector’s vulnerability to spending cycles. QQQ and SPY Also Carry Hidden AI Risks At September-end, the top 10 stocks represented approximately 47% of the Invesco QQQ Trust QQQ and 39% of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE: SPY ) . “The risk runs deeper than the weights. Nvidia sells to Microsoft Corp MSFT , Amazon.com, Inc AMZN , Alphabet Inc GOOGL and Meta Platforms, Inc META , which sit in the same funds, so one capex decision hits both sides,” Schwartz explained. He added, “A cap-weighted index is static by design. It owns the most of whatever has already risen the most, and it rides every decline.” Investors seeking to reduce concentration could consider the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (NYSE: RSP ) , where technology accounts for approximately 16% of assets, compared with roughly 40% in SPY. However, equal weighting introduces greater exposure to banks, cyclicals and rate-sensitive stocks, Schwartz cautioned. Why a Low Bubble Score Doesn’t Eliminate AI Risks Three of the index’s 10 indicators currently carry yellow readings: AI-linked layoffs, China’s cheaper AI models and the yield curve. Big Tech capital expenditure already consumes approximately 80% of operating cash flow, with spending above 100% triggering a warning. Schwartz also sees cheaper Chinese AI models threatening U.S. companies’ pricing power. “In my view, it’s the chance that AI monetization disappoints because of Chinese ‘AI dumping,’ landing on a highly concentrated system,” he said. Drawing parallels with Cisco Systems Inc CSCO during the dot-com boom, Schwartz noted that even dominant technology suppliers can experience severe corrections. “Cisco sold the routers that built the internet, Nvidia sells the chips that power AI, and both became the world’s most valuable company,” Schwartz said. “On its way up, Cisco fell 38% in early 1997 on slowing sales and 37% in 1998 during the Russia/LTCM crisis. Yet it gained about 590% in the two years before its March 2000 peak. Nvidia lost $589 billion in one day on the DeepSeek scare in January 2025, then regained nearly all of it within weeks. Scares like these are swings. Cisco fell 89% by October 2002 only after its customers stopped buying,” he explained, noting that what ends a boom remained the same — customers reducing spending. For ETF investors, his warning is particularly relevant: “Segments can swing hard inside a calm market. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index closed 20% below its June record in July, then fell 6.7% on October 22 alone.”

Tesla Stock Moves Higher: What's Going On. Tesla Inc . TSLA shares are rising Monday. Data showed its car registrations jumped across Europe in October, with huge gains in Sweden, Spain, Portugal and Norway. Here’s what you should know . Tesla stock is showing upward movement. Why is TSLA stock advancing? Tesla Stock Rises as European Registrations Surge Tesla shares are climbing Monday after October registrations rose sharply in several European countries. Spain posted the biggest jump at 271%. Sweden followed at 248%, then Portugal at 186%, Norway at 131%, Italy at 94% and Denmark at 34%, Reuters reported from national agency data. Some of those jumps start from small bases. Tesla registered 412 cars in Portugal in October and 497 in Italy. Year to date through October, the carmaker has registered 9,673 cars in Portugal, up 62.5%, and 10,919 in Italy, up 21%. Reuters lists four reasons for the rebound: weak comparisons with last year, higher fuel costs, government incentives and growing demand for electric vehicles. At the end of September, Tesla’s passenger car order backlog stood at a four-year high, the company said in October. Tesla’s European Rebound is Uneven Results differ sharply by country, and Chinese automakers are gaining ground. Tesla still counts among Europe’s top electric brands. Its lineup, though, centers on just two cars, the Model Y and Model 3, while competitors sell a wider range. Norway stands out. OFV data show Tesla notched a record October there and outsold every other brand, with 9.8% of the market. Chinese brands also set a record, reaching 22.5% of new-car registrations. ING economist Rico Luman said Norwegians tend to be wealthier than buyers elsewhere in Europe, which makes cheaper Chinese models less appealing. TSLA Shares Are Climbing TSLA Price Action: Tesla shares were up 1.68% at $406.52 at the time of publication on Monday, according to Benzinga Pro .

Trump's $350 Billion Defense Gamble Has a $290 Billion Problem. President Donald Trump wants Congress to add $350 billion in military funding for fiscal 2027, but lawmakers appear ready to deliver only a fraction of it . ONDS stock is sinking Monday. Get all the details here. A new analysis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), published last Wednesday, concludes any additional defense money Congress passes is more likely to land near $60 billion than the $350 billion the White House requested. The difference comes to $290 billion. Where the Numbers Stand The administration’s request would sit on top of $1.15 trillion in regular defense spending. Budget proposals in the House and Senate, however, set aside just $60 billion for the extra funding through the reconciliation process. Those figures have been public since earlier this year, and Politico reported in July on the trouble facing Trump’s roughly $1.5 trillion defense plan. CSIS points to divisions within the Republican Party as a central obstacle. Some GOP lawmakers want spending cuts to offset any new military money. Others are pushing for even more defense spending. Agreement has been hard to find. Even the $60 billion outcome assumes Republicans settle those differences first. Midterms Raise the Stakes Tuesday’s elections add another layer of pressure. If Democrats win control of either chamber on Nov. 3, Republicans could be left with only the short post-election session to pass the additional funding before the new Congress takes office in January. The calendar is tight. CSIS counted just 20 scheduled House session days and 22 Senate session days after the election. What Is at Stake Trump’s request includes $113 billion for defense manufacturing and $103 billion for advanced technologies, including drones and AI. A smaller package could leave some programs facing funding shortfalls or delays. Exposure varies, but could hit several types of companies across the defense sector. Lockheed Martin Corp. LMT and RTX Corp. RTX rank among the Pentagon’s largest prime contractors, with businesses tied to fighter jets, missiles and missile defense. Money aimed at manufacturing would likely matter most to companies like these, both of which have been working to expand production of munitions and interceptors . Palantir Technologies Inc. PLTR sits closer to the technology side of the request. Its software and AI platforms have become a growing part of Pentagon modernization efforts, which makes the advanced technology bucket especially relevant to the company. AeroVironment Inc. AVAV and Ondas Inc. ONDS could be exposed if funding to drone programs is cut. AeroVironment builds small unmanned aircraft and loitering munitions such as the Switchblade, while Ondas has expanded into autonomous drone and counter-drone systems. Smaller defense companies often see sharper stock swings when spending expectations shift. A Conditional Forecast CSIS is offering a conditional assessment, not reporting a decision by Congress. Congress has not cut the $290 billion. Lawmakers could still approve additional defense funding through other legislation. Election results could also quickly reshape the math, depending on which party controls each chamber next year. Defense investors will likely get their first clues Tuesday night.

Active Fund Managers Staged a Big Comeback. Can It Last? — Barrons.com. By Paul R. La Monica Well, at least some investors had a good month. While some nasty tumbles caused the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite to fall 0.9% and 5.3% in October, respectively — the stock selloff might not have been as bad as the headline numbers suggest. In fact, active stockpickers shined last month while the indexes dipped, reflecting just how much of the market's drop can be blamed on tech. Investors didn't flee stocks entirely. They just rotated to other sectors of the market instead. The equal-weighted S&P 500 gained 2% in the final two weeks of October while the market-cap-weighted index fell 1%. Strategists at Jefferies pointed out in a report Sunday that the market reversing course at the end of the month was "very helpful for active managers," as "the market showed signs of broadening." According to Jefferies, 64.4% of active managers beat their benchmarks in October. As a result, nearly half (47%) of active fund managers are now outperforming the indexes for the year. The firm's data also show that much of the recent volatility on Wall Street is due almost entirely to violent moves in tech and other AI-related stocks following earnings from the likes of Alphabet, Amazon.com, Intel and ServiceNow. The rest of the market is actually holding up just fine. In addition to equal-weighted strategies performing well, small-cap funds topped large-caps, with small value strategies in particular doing well, Jefferies said. More than 90% of active small value funds beat their relevant index in October. Mid-cap growth funds also had a strong October; 83% of the actively managed funds in that category topped their passively run index benchmark. Bank of America Securities equity and quant strategists said in a report Monday that the big moves in the back half of October were a sign of "extreme rotation beneath the surface." Defensive sectors such as consumer staples, healthcare, and utilities, which are all known for paying sizable dividends, all performed well in October. So did energy stocks, which got a boost from higher oil prices. As such, the Russell 1000 Value index outperformed its growth counterpart in October by the widest spread since February 2001, according to BofA. The strategists added that 76% of S&P 500 stocks ended the month ahead of the cap-weighted index. That's the highest total ever since BofA began tracking this statistic in 1986. Can the rotation trend continue? Chris Galipeau, head market strategist at the Franklin Templeton Institute, thinks so. He says a big reason for the market's swings lately is that earnings expectations for the tech sector have been so high. Traders are punishing AI companies for not living up to the proverbial hype, and they are starting to look elsewhere for companies that are also are expected to post solid earnings growth — and whose shares trade at more attractive valuations than Big Tech. "We expect the rotation to continue," Galipeau wrote in a Friday note. "The earnings bar is high — very high. Any minor misstep has led to punishment, which has led to rotation. Rotation isn't a bad thing, and if you are running a diversified equity portfolio, you should be in good shape." To be sure, the AI trade is far from having run its course. Earnings from Nvidia later this month and the coming initial public offering of Anthropic — which is likely before Thanksgiving — could serve as further catalysts to push the Nasdaq and tech stocks even higher. But the market action of the past few weeks has hopefully reminded investors that not having all your eggs in the AI basket is a good thing. Lisa Shalett, chief investment officer of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, said in a report Monday that the S&P 500 is only about 3% below its all-time high "despite intense subsurface rotations." That's largely due to "stronger breadth and positive earnings revisions." Her advice? "Diversified portfolios are working, and we encourage staying the course." So when the Magnificent Seven stocks plus Broadcom, Micron and Advanced Micro Devices make up about 40.5% of the market value of the S&P 500, it isn't a bad idea for investors to find some fund managers who are looking beyond those 10 companies (as well as newly public SpaceX with its nearly $2 trillion valuation) for good stock ideas. Not everything is about AI — even if it seems that way. Write to Paul R. La Monica at paul.lamonica@barrons.com This content was created by Barron's, which is operated by Dow Jones & Co. JPM is bullish on midterms: "SPX has been up a year after every midterm election since 1950 with an average gain of around 15%. The worst one-year forward return came after the 1986 midterms but this, of course, had more to do with the 1987 crash rather than anything going on in Washington. I suspect that at least part of the reason for this tendency is that the midterms tend to see the incumbent party loses seats and gridlock in Washington tends to be good for Wall Street."
