Six reasons Democrats may fall short of a midterm landslide in November. By Tim Reid Republican President Donald Trump's low approval ratings, voter concern over high prices and dissatisfaction with the Iran war have led many analysts and opinion polls to predict significant Democratic gains in Tuesday's midterm elections . But six analysts and party strategists told Reuters several factors could prevent Democrats from turning those favorable political conditions into a landslide, even if the party ultimately makes gains in Congress. Recent opinion polls have shown Democrats increasingly competitive in once reliably Republican seats and the party has been expanding its efforts into Trump's conservative heartland. Democrats are widely expected to have a good election night, but the scale of any victory is still uncertain. Here are six reasons Democrats may fall short of expectations. FEWER COMPETITIVE HOUSE RACES The number of competitive US House races has shrunk sharply over the past three decades as partisan polarization and redistricting – including gerrymandering – have made more seats safely Democratic or Republican. As a result, analysts estimate that only about 40 to 50 of the House's 435 seats are truly competitive this year. Most expect Democrats to retake the lower chamber from Republicans, but with a majority of perhaps 5 to 20 seats, limiting the scope for gains like those in 2018, when Democrats picked up 41 seats. Bill Galston, a former White House adviser to President Bill Clinton, said if Democrats gain even 25 House seats, "they'd have a working majority, but not a huge one." Such a majority would give Democrats control of the House but little room to maneuver, making it harder to pass contentious legislation or claim the sweeping mandate associated with past wave elections. SENATE MAJORITY NO SURE THING While Democrats are favored to make gains in the 100-member Senate, achieving the net gain of four seats needed for a 51-49 majority remains far from certain because many of their top pickup targets are in states Trump carried by wide margins in 2024. David Wasserman, an elections analyst at the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, said Democrats must make breakthroughs in states Trump carried by double digits. Even a national swing of 10 percentage points toward Democrats would likely leave the party two seats short of a majority, he said. Democrats also face tougher-than-expected contests in states they had hoped would be safer, including Maine, New Hampshire and Michigan. "Republicans are hanging very close in those races," said Andrew Busch, a public policy professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and author of a history of midterm elections. "That's not necessarily what you would expect if things were going well for Democrats across the board." TURNOUT Opinion polls show Democratic voters more enthusiastic than Republicans, but strategists caution that such Democratic constituencies as young, Black and Hispanic voters have historically turned out at lower rates in midterm elections than in presidential years. Surveys show persistent skepticism among these groups towards both parties, especially over the cost of living. If turnout among those groups falls short of expectations, Democrats could underperform on Election Day, analysts said. Early voting data in states that register voters by party showed higher Democratic engagement. But Republicans argue that many of their supporters traditionally wait until Election Day to vote. In the 2022 midterms, voters aged 50 and older made up nearly twice as much of the electorate as those under 50. In recent years older voters have leaned Republican, according to exit-poll surveys. REPUBLICAN MONEY ADVANTAGE Republicans entered the campaign's final stretch with a substantial financial advantage, although spending in key races so far has had mixed results. Republicans held a cash advantage of several hundred million dollars heading into the final weeks of the campaign across their national party committees and major allied super PACs, according to committee filings and Federal Election Commission data. Trump spent more than $277 million, mostly through his MAGA Inc. super PAC, on a late TV and direct-mail blitz to aid struggling Republican candidates, according to Federal Election Commission data. Tesla TSLA CEO Elon Musk spent roughly $366 million during the midterm cycle, including $276 million since July, to support Republican candidates. Republicans outspent Democrats by $188 million in Senate battleground advertising by the end of September, according to AdImpact, which tracks advertising spending. "Any time you have one side with a big financial advantage and the ability to pour it into races at the last minute, it can tip the result of close races," Busch said. POLLS HAVE MISSED REPUBLICAN STRENGTH Opinion polls have frequently underestimated Republican support in recent election cycles. Reuters/Ipsos polling shows registered voters favoring Democrats over Republicans by 47% to 35% on the congressional generic ballot. The largest polling misses came when Trump was on the ballot. Trump, who is not on the ballot this year, has urged supporters to treat November's election as if he were. Polls significantly understated Republican strength in the 2014 midterms, when the party won a sweeping Senate victory. But midterm polls in 2022 underestimated how well Democrats would perform. SOCIALISM ATTACKS COULD RESONATE Trump and many Republican candidates have sought to paint Democrats as socialists and extremists who pose an existential threat to the country. Democrats in competitive races are increasingly declaring themselves proud capitalists, worried that the Republican tactics could sway critical independent voters. Republicans are highlighting victories by members of the Democratic Socialists of America movement and progressive candidates in Democratic primaries to portray the whole party as socialist, even though fewer than two dozen of them scored wins this year. Galston said the attacks could resonate with some wavering voters and influence close races. "It might be effective at the margins," Galston said. "It could reduce the Democratic advantage by one or two points in the close races."
Six things to watch as US voters decide control of Congress. By Tim Reid Americans head to the polls on Tuesday in midterm elections that will decide control of Congress for the final two years of President Donald Trump's term. The results will serve as the first nationwide verdict on Trump's presidency, revealing whether voters want to check the Republican president's power by giving Democrats control of one or both chambers of Congress or are willing to accept the status quo despite frustrations over the cost of living and the US-led war with Iran. The outcome could also reshape debates within both parties over which messages and policies resonate most with voters ahead of the 2028 presidential election. Here are six things to watch on Election Day. THE RACES THAT WILL DECIDE CONTROL OF CONGRESS Democrats need a net gain of four seats in both the US House of Representatives and US Senate to overturn Republicans' narrow 218-214 and 53-47 majorities. They are widely expected to reclaim the House, but the Senate battle remains highly competitive. The scale of Democratic gains in one or both chambers will shape Trump's ability to advance his agenda. Democratic wins in one or both chambers will likely trigger investigations into ethics of Trump and his administration, their handling of immigration enforcement and the Iran war. A stronger-than-expected Republican showing could reinforce Trump's grip on the party. Heavy losses could increase pressure to rethink unpopular policies such as tariffs and the war while shaping the message of candidates vying to succeed him. Early results from Republican-held House seats in Florida and Virginia could provide clues to the size of any Democratic gains. Victories in competitive districts would point to a solid Democratic night, while wins in more Republican-leaning areas could signal a much broader backlash against Trump and his policies. The close Senate fight will likely hinge on six to eight races. Democrats need to flip several Republican-held seats in states Trump carried by double-digit margins in 2024, including Ohio, Iowa, Alaska and Texas. Even Kansas, despite Trump's 16-point win there, has become competitive in recent weeks and a Democratic victory would signal a broader wave. Republicans can retain control by winning most of those contests, while Democrats will likely need to hold Michigan and pick up Maine. PROBLEMS AT THE POLLS AND VOTE COUNT Election officials have warned close races could spark disputes over voter eligibility, ballot counting and certification, while long lines, machine malfunctions or challenges by partisan poll watchers could fuel litigation and delay results. Trump's Justice Department plans to deploy about 1,000 monitors nationwide on Election Day, roughly triple the number used in the last midterms, a move some local officials worry could intimidate voters, although the DOJ says those fears are baseless. Some election officials and legal experts fear federal investigations and legal challenges could delay or disrupt certification of election results in close races. On October 22, Trump's Justice Department sued to preemptively block Alaska from certifying the results of its Senate race if the Republican incumbent candidate loses by a narrow margin, saying voters could be confused because two Republicans on the ballot have almost identical names. Attorney General Todd Blanche on October 22 declined to rule out Justice Department intervention in state election certifications, saying extreme circumstances could warrant action. Several states are also unlikely to produce complete results on election night, especially in close races, providing fertile ground for disputes. TRUMP'S RESPONSE TO THE RESULTS How Trump responds to the results, especially if Republicans lose control of Congress, could become one of the night's biggest stories. In the early hours of November 4, 2020, before vote counting had finished in several states, Trump declared victory and called for counting to stop. He ultimately lost to Democrat Joe Biden but continued to falsely claim the election had been stolen, helping fuel the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by a mob of his supporters who were seeking to stop certification of Biden's win by Congress. Trump still falsely claims he won the 2020 election and has cast doubt on the integrity of these midterms, raising the prospect of Republican challenges if the party loses one or both chambers. This year, the Trump administration has pressed states for voter data and launched investigations into noncitizen voting, which election experts and studies have found little evidence to support. It recently sued California over alleged noncitizen ballots. TURNOUT Turnout by the parties' core supporters will be important. Opinion polls showed Democrats significantly more enthusiastic about voting than Republicans heading into Election Day. But strategists caution that Democratic constituencies including young, Black and Hispanic voters have historically turned out at lower rates in midterm elections than in presidential years. Surveys show persistent skepticism among these groups towards both parties, especially over the cost of living. If turnout among those groups falls short of expectations, Democrats could underperform on Election Day. Early voting data in states that register voters by party showed higher Democratic engagement. But Republicans argue that many of their supporters traditionally wait until Election Day to vote. WHAT DO RESULTS MEAN FOR THE 2028 RACE? After their bruising defeat in the 2024 presidential election, Democrats have been split between those arguing for a more populist economic message and those favoring a centrist approach aimed at winning back swing voters. Strong performances by moderates and left-wing candidates on Tuesday will allow both factions to claim validation of their policies. That could set the stage for a crowded and potentially contentious contest for the party's 2028 presidential nomination. DID REPUBLICANS' MONEY ADVANTAGE PAY OFF? Republicans had a significant financial advantage and flooded the airwaves with ads attacking Democratic candidates. While some Democrats matched or outraised their opponents, Republicans held an overall spending edge of several hundred million dollars once party committees and outside groups were included. A key question is whether that advantage helped sway tight races, or whether voter concerns over high prices and the Iran war mattered more.

What's Going On With Broadcom Stock Monday. Broadcom Inc. AVGO stock rose more than 1% in Monday’s premarket trading as technology stocks gained ground. Nasdaq futures climbed 0.85%, while S&P 500 futures advanced 0.53%. The gains came amid renewed investor interest in large-cap technology stocks, although Broadcom remains below key moving averages. AI Infrastructure Remains the Core Growth Story Broadcom continues to benefit from growing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure, including custom AI chips, advanced optics and Ethernet networking. At the 2026 Open Compute Project Global Summit, Broadcom highlighted growing adoption of Ethernet technology for AI networks. More than five hyperscalers were using its Ethernet scale-up technology in production, while over 10 partners were developing systems based on Broadcom chips. The company also showcased its Tomahawk 6, Tomahawk Ultra, Jericho 4, Thor Ultra and Thor 2 products, along with third-generation co-packaged optics. Broadcom highlighted the industry’s shift toward co-packaged optics and Optical Compute Interconnect as larger AI clusters demand faster connections and greater bandwidth. Meanwhile, a $63 billion financing package tied to Anthropic’s AI infrastructure expansion could support demand for Broadcom’s custom chips and networking equipment. Deployments are expected to begin in 2027 . CEO Hock Tan reportedly backed stronger financial guarantees and higher interest rates sought by banks arranging the financing. CNBC’s Jim Cramer also expressed confidence in Broadcom Wednesday, describing it as one of the strongest long-term performers and saying he would not sell the stock. Technical Analysis Broadcom remains under technical pressure despite Monday’s premarket gains. The stock trades 4.7% below its 20-day simple moving average (SMA), 6.6% below its 50-day SMA and more than 10% below its 100-day and 200-day averages. Its 20-day average remains below the 50-day average. A death cross formed in October, when the 50-day average fell below the 200-day average, reinforcing the bearish trend. However, momentum shows early signs of improvement. The moving average convergence divergence (MACD) indicator has moved above its signal line, with a positive histogram suggesting selling pressure may be easing. Immediate resistance stands near $366.50, while support sits around $308.50. Analyst Outlook Broadcom carries a consensus Buy rating and an average analyst price forecast of $523.77 . Rosenblatt maintained its Buy rating with a $600 price forecast on Oct. 27. DA Davidson upgraded Broadcom to Buy and raised its forecast to $400 the same day. Tigress Financial initiated coverage with a Buy rating and a $600 forecast on Oct. 22. Broadcom’s Benzinga Edge rankings show strong Quality at 94.75, but weaker Momentum at 14.13 and Value at 7.52. Growth stands at 30.68. The rankings suggest that Broadcom’s business fundamentals remain strong, although valuation concerns and weak technical momentum could limit near-term gains. AVGO Stock Price Activity Broadcom shares rose 1.14% to $329.80 in Monday’s premarket trading, according to Benzinga Pro data .
Tesla's monthly registrations surge in Northern Europe even as Chinese competition rises. By Amir Orusov Registrations of new Tesla TSLA cars rose across several Northern European markets in October, as the US electric vehicle maker extended its regional sales recovery despite growing competition from Chinese automakers. Tesla registrations soared 248% in Sweden, 131% in Norway and 34% in Denmark, data from Mobility Sweden, Norway's OFV and Denmark's bilstatistik.dk showed. The rebound has been aided by easier year-ago comparisons, higher fuel prices, government incentives and continued growth in EV demand. Performance, however, varied across the region. Tesla saw strong gains in Norway and Sweden, but trailed several Chinese rivals in Denmark, which highlights the increasingly fragmented competitive landscape in Europe. In Norway, Tesla recorded its best October on record and was the country's top-selling car brand with a 9.8% market share, according to OFV. Chinese brands continued to expand their footprint, accounting for 22.5% of new passenger car registrations, their highest monthly share on record. "Especially in Norway people are generally more affluent than elsewhere in Europe, people are less seeking the lower offerings of Chinese brands than in other European countries," Rico Luman, senior economist at ING Research, said. By contrast, Tesla's market share in Denmark was only 0.73%, behind BYD 002594 , Leapmotor 9863 , Xpeng 9868 and SAIC-owned 600104 MG, which captured between 1.6% and 5.5% of the market each. "Northern Europe is quite open to the new players as long as they are efficient EVs. That's what allowed Tesla to get to a leading position and it’s what is allowing the Chinese to gain ground fast," industry analyst Felipe Munoz, who runs the Car Industry Analysis platform, told Reuters. Tesla remains one of Europe's strongest EV brands, though its reliance on the Model 3 and Model Y has left it facing growing competition from rivals with broader line-ups. The automaker said in October it had ended the third quarter with its largest passenger vehicle order backlog in four years.
Jim Chanos Warns Elon Musk’s Space Data Center Math Could Be Way Off: ‘$5T Per GW…’. Short seller James Chanos questioned Elon Musk ‘s projections for orbital data centers on Sunday, suggesting the economics could be far more expensive than what Space Exploration Technologies Corp. SPCX management and bulls anticipate. Space Data Centers Could Cost Up To 100x More In a post on the social media platform X , Chanos quoted a post by the Techmeme handle that cited an article by The Information, which said that Amanda Peterson Corio , who is the Global head of Energy and Power at Google , said that space data centers could cost 100x more than terrestrial data centers. “So $5T per GW…?!” Chanos asked in his post. “The fact that the head of data center energy at a hyperscaler is this far off from estimates from $SPCX management/bulls should give pause to anyone trying to model this business out. James Chanos @RealJimChanos So $5T per GW…?! The fact that the head of data center energy at a hyperscaler is this far off from estimates from $SPCX management/bulls should give pause to anyone trying to model this business out. https://t.co/X5GrF7b5mt Nov 02, 2026 Chanos, who has been a vocal critic of Musk, earlier warned that the goal to establish data centers in orbit was “absurd.” Chanos also argued against power bottlenecks, saying that regulatory progress was a limiting factor instead. Chanos also criticized SpaceX’s recent $40 billion GPU financing as the company ramps up terrestrial AI compute, even as orbital infrastructure remains a central part of its long-term growth strategy. Elon Musk Backs Orbital Data Centers Notably, Musk said that terrestrial compute would be “peanuts” compared to Orbital data centers in a post on X on Saturday. “Orbital compute deployed per month probably exceeds terrestrial around the end of 2028 and then far exceeds it in 2029,” the SpaceX CEO added. Elon Musk @elonmusk Terrestrial compute will be peanuts compared to orbital compute. Orbital compute deployed per month probably exceeds terrestrial around the end of 2028 and then far exceeds it in 2029. Oct 31, 2026 Bill Ackman on AI Buildout Investor Bill Ackman , who is the founder of Pershing Square Capital , said that companies like SpaceX, which were heavily investing in building out AI infrastructure, could incur debt that would rival entire countries . On the other hand, Musk also warned that neoclouds, which are companies providing specialized AI compute capabilities, may not be able to access debt and that they were at risk of getting consolidated or failing.
