Top News Today: Stocks Fall as Alphabet Slide Dents AI Optimism. MARKET WRAPS STOCKS: Stocks fell after Alphabet's quarterly revenue shortfall spurred a deep loss for the Google parent and broader fears about the artificial-intelligence boom. TREASURYS: Treasury yields fell after inflation data that was more or less in line with economists' expectations. FOREX: The U.S. dollar fell as traders digested Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's comments. COMMODITIES: Oil futures slipped as traders weighed reports of potential negotiations between the U.S. and Iran against reports that President Trump was reviewing attack plans. HEADLINES Alphabet Sheds Half a Trillion in Market Value in Stock's Worst Day Ever Google's stock suffered its worst day on record Thursday as investors confronted the reality that a company that has long been a dynamo of growth and profits faces painful trade-offs from the artificial-intelligence transition. The slide erased roughly $500 billion from Alphabet's market value. It also weighed on major U.S. stock indexes, fueling a decline in the Nasdaq composite and amplifying fears that the costs of the global AI build-out may be outrunning the returns. The tech giant reported on Wednesday that its Google Services unit, which includes search advertising, YouTube and subscriptions, generated $96.3 billion, missing Wall Street expectations of $98.5 billion, signaling that Google's biggest revenue engine is slowing as internet habits change and AI reshapes how consumers search for information and products. DoorDash to Buy Instacart for $17 Billion DoorDash has struck a deal to buy food-delivery rival Instacart for about $17 billion in cash and stock, adding a major grocery delivery partner to its growing roster of services. DoorDash on Thursday said the deal values Instacart at $65 a share, an 11% premium to Wednesday's closing price of $58.42 and roughly 26% above Instacart's closing price of $51.68 on Oct. 22, before published reports that the company was pursuing a sale. The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that DoorDash was in advanced talks to acquire Instacart, citing people familiar with the matter. Amazon Earnings Miss Wall Street Estimates Despite Highest Cloud Growth in Five Years Amazon.com reported higher-than-expected revenue from Amazon Web Services in its third-quarter earnings on Thursday, showing sustained momentum in its cloud computing business. Amazon Web Services brought in $46 billion in revenue for the three months through September, accounting for 39% growth year-over-year, the company said. Overall revenue increased 12% to $201.9 billion, and net income was $20.7 billion. Both were below analysts' estimates polled by FactSet. Starbucks Same-Store Sales Climb on U.S. Growth Starbucks recorded higher same-store sales in the fiscal fourth quarter, as its turnaround plan drives revenue in the U.S. The coffee-shop chain posted a profit of $677.2 million, or 59 cents a share, compared with $133.1 million, or 12 cents a share, a year earlier. Stripping out certain one-time items, adjusted per-share earnings were 80 cents, ahead of the 72 cents anticipated by analysts, according to FactSet. U.S. Economy Accelerated This Summer Despite High Gas Prices U.S. economic growth picked up steam over the summer. Business investment surged, driven by the artificial-intelligence build-out, and consumers continued to spend at a healthy clip despite high gas prices and other affordability concerns. The Commerce Department said Thursday that U.S. gross domestic product-the value of all goods and services produced across the economy-rose at a 3.4% annual rate in the third quarter. That number is adjusted for inflation and seasonality. PCE Inflation Accelerated Last Month The inflation metric targeted by the Federal Reserve sped up in September, showing why elevated price increases hang over the central bank's next moves. Prices as measured by the personal-consumption expenditures price index increased by 0.5% last month, after rising by 0.3% in August, the Commerce Department said Thursday. The 12-month PCE inflation rate climbed to 3.6%, from 3.4% a month earlier. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, core PCE inflation was 0.3% in September and 3.1% over the trailing 12 months. U.S. Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Edge Lower U.S. jobless claims were subdued again last week, defying forecasts for an uptick as the labor market remains slow but sturdy. The number of people who filed for unemployment benefits was 194,000 in the week through Oct. 24, 1,000 lower than the revised 195,000 reported a week earlier, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal were expecting to see 200,000 new claims. Continuing claims, which scale with the total size of the unemployed population, totaled about 1.7 million in the week through Oct. 17, falling by 21,000 from the downwardly revised total a week earlier. The data on continuing claims lag the initial-claims data by a week. Josh Kushner's Thrive to Buy ADT for $7.6 Billion Home-security company ADT has agreed to be acquired for $7.6 billion in cash by Thrive Holdings, an investment vehicle formed by Josh Kushner's venture-capital firm, Thrive Capital. ADT on Thursday said Thrive would pay $10 a share in cash for the Boca Raton, Fla., company, a 35% premium to Wednesday's closing price of $7.41. Shares of ADT were recently up 34% to $9.93 in early trading. Caterpillar Sales Jump on Growing AI Demand, But Wall Street Wanted More Caterpillar continues to grow, just not fast enough for Wall Street. The industrial-equipment maker said revenue rose 17% to $20.68 billion in the third quarter, missing analyst estimates and marking a sequential slowdown from the 24% gain the company logged three months prior. Much of Caterpillar's growth in recent years has stemmed from its power-and-energy division, which manufactures large power-generation sets and turbines that serve electricity-hungry data centers. Sales across the unit climbed 18%, to $8.78 billion, during the recent quarter. Eli Lilly Revenue Climbs on Demand for Obesity Drugs Eli Lilly's quarterly revenue jumped on surging demand for its diabetes and obesity drugs Mounjaro and Zepbound. The third-quarter results topped Wall Street's expectations, and prompted the pharmaceutical company to boost its full-year revenue guidance for the third time this year. The stock gained 6.2% to $1,368.27 on Thursday. Shares are now up 28% year to date. Mastercard Profit Rises on Payment Network, Services Growth Mastercard reported higher quarterly profit on sales growth for both its payment-network division and its services-and-solutions business. The credit-card company on Thursday posted a third-quarter profit of $4.63 billion, or $5.28 a share, compared with $3.93 billion, or $4.34 a share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share were $5.31, compared with analyst estimates of $5.17, according to FactSet. Clorox Names Unilever's Fabian Garcia as CEO Clorox has hired Unilever executive Fabian Garcia as its next chief executive. The parent of its name-sake brand and cupboard staples including Pine-Sol, Purell and Liquid-Plumr said Garcia will step into the role effective Jan. 5, succeeding Linda Rendle who announced in May that she was stepping down for health reasons. Garcia, currently president of Unilever Personal Care and a member of the Unilever's executive team, has more than four decades experience in global consumer products. Before joining Unilever in 2020, he was CEO of Revlon and served as chief operating officer for global innovation and growth at Colgate-Palmolive. Earlier in his career, he served in leadership roles at Procter & Gamble. Hershey's Sales Rise Despite Growing Consumer Caution Hershey reported higher quarterly sales, citing momentum for its marketing initiatives despite growing consumer caution. The maker of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Twizzlers on Thursday posted a third-quarter profit of $580.8 million, or $2.88 a share, compared with $276.3 million, or $1.36 a share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share were $2.64, compared with analyst estimates of $2.11, according to FactSet. Altria Lifts Earnings Outlook as Profit, Revenue Climb Altria Group raised its full-year earnings outlook after reporting higher profit and revenue in the latest quarter, as the company's cigarette brands scooped up market share and it invested in its smoke-free portfolio. The tobacco company posted a third-quarter profit of $2.52 billion, or $1.51 a share, compared with $2.38 billion, or $1.41 a share, a year earlier. Stripping out certain one-time items, earnings were $1.52 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected adjusted earnings of $1.51 a share. Merck Revenue Up on Keytruda, Winrevair Growth Merck & Co. reported higher revenue in the latest quarter, pointing to strength for drugs such as Keytruda and Winrevair, as well as its animal health business. The third-quarter results topped Wall Street's expectations, and prompted the company to bump up both its profit and sales forecasts for the year. The stock gained 4.5% to $147.27 on Thursday, and is now up 40% year to date. TALKING POINT The Four Academics Who Dreamed Up California's Billionaire Tax The proposed California wealth tax has galvanized a host of billionaires who have lined up to fight it. On the other side lies a group of less obvious power brokers: the four professors who drafted the ballot measure. The group is made up of three professors at the University of California: Berkeley economist Emmanuel Saez and law professors Brian Galle and Darien Shanske, at Berkeley and Davis, respectively. The fourth is tax scholar David Gamage at the University of Missouri's law school. The four have advised on a host of similar measures at both the state and federal level that have stalled so far. The California billionaire tax, on the ballot Tuesday as Prop. 40, represents the closest they have come to seeing a wealth-tax proposal they helped craft become law. It has become one of the costliest ballot fights in California's history and has exposed deep divisions among Democrats. If it becomes law, it would be the first U.S. wealth tax in the modern era. The academics behind the measure have quietly become the go-to brain trust for Democratic lawmakers and state activists, but they have garnered criticism elsewhere. "The Billionaire Tax is a new proposal written by four professors who don't believe in the American dream," said investor and "All-In" podcast host Chamath Palihapitiya on X earlier this year. "Some of them aren't even American...go figure," he added, presumably referring to Saez, a prominent economist who has both French and U.S. citizenship. Prop. 40 calls for a one-time, 5% tax on the net worth of each California billionaire who was a state resident on Jan. 1, 2026. Supporters estimate it could raise more than $100 billion to cover shortfalls wrought by Trump's tax law. They argue few billionaires would leave the state over a one-time tax whose toll they could quickly erase through investment and business gains, and that California will keep minting new billionaires, notwithstanding the tax. Sandisk sees revenue nearly quintuple - and its stock is heading higher. By Emily Bary and Hannah Pedone Sandisk's earnings show that the company is growing quite profitably Sandisk's stock is up more than 450% this year. One of the market's hottest artificial-intelligence companies just impressed with its latest earnings commentary. Sandisk (SNDK) gave a forecast that calls for $12.2 billion to $12.6 billion in revenue during the December quarter, whereas analysts tracked by FactSet had been looking for $12.3 billion. Revenue for the September quarter came in at $11 billion, up 378% from a year prior, while analysts were modeling $10.7 billion. CEO David Goeckeler called out "robust and growing demand for our products," which fueled "outpaced growth in our data-center business." Shares were up 2% in Thursday's extended session. Sandisk has been a major beneficiary of the AI boom, which has fueled unprecedented demand for products that store and move data. The company has been able to grow quite profitably, as tight supply of its storage offerings has allowed it to raise prices dramatically. To that end, the company logged an 85.1% adjusted gross margin for the September quarter, with that measure showing the portion of money Sandisk was able to retain after covering the costs of making its products. This marked an expansion from the 84.6% adjusted operating margin recorded in the June quarter. Sandisk's forecast calls for an adjusted gross margin of 84.5% to 85.5% in the December quarter. Adjusted earnings per share in the September quarter ballooned 6,913% to $52.60 and exceeded expectations for $46.67, although the company flagged that the percentage is "not a meaningful figure." Sandisk shares have been among the best performers in the S&P 500 SPX this year, rising more than 450% so far in 2026, a gain second only to that of Moderna (MRNA). -Emily Bary -Hannah Pedone This content was created by MarketWatch, which is operated by Dow Jones & Co. Wall Street ends lower as Alphabet revenue miss revives AI capex jitters. By Stephen Culp and Shashwat Chauhan US stocks slid on Thursday, with investors reassessing big tech's massive AI spending spree as they digested high-profile earnings and crucial inflation data the day after the Federal Reserve held US interest rates steady. All three major US equity indexes lost ground, with the tech-laden Nasdaq losing the most in the wake of Alphabet's GOOG disappointing quarterly results released late Wednesday. In contrast, the smallcap Russell 2000 RUT advanced 1.0%. Semiconductor stocks SOX snapped their four-day winning streak, dropping 1.4% as investors sought to distinguish between companies that can fund their lofty AI ambitions and those that burn through cash and borrow funds to realize their goals. Alphabet GOOG was in the latter camp following its quarterly report released late on Wednesday. The Google parent's revenue miss was compounded by its accelerated AI-related cash burn. Its shares slid 12.6%, dragging the communication services sector S5TELS down with it. "A risk-off day like this, with small caps outperforming, is a good sign that thus far the market's interpretation of cracks in the AI story doesn't mean cracks in every corner of the market," said Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst at Baird in Louisville, Kentucky. "There's plenty of other places to go with your money outside of the AI trade that have pretty decent prospects." On Wednesday, Federal Reserve policymakers chose to hold US rates steady, acknowledging that while price pressures remain "elevated," the central bank will decide on its next move as it "accumulates more information." A raft of economic data released on Thursday answered that call, with a first take on third-quarter GDP that showed the US economy grew at a faster-than-expected pace in the third quarter, while price growth continued to heat up with a war-related oil supply crunch feeding into broader, systemic inflation. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJI fell 132.54 points, or 0.25%, to 52,342.56, the S&P 500 CBOE:SPX lost 23.59 points, or 0.30%, to 7,720.39 and the Nasdaq Composite IXIC lost 365.13 points, or 1.37%, to 26,184.72. Third-quarter earnings season has crossed the halfway point, with 253 of the companies in the S&P 500 having reported. Of those, 81% have beaten analyst expectations, according to the most recent LSEG data. Analysts now expect aggregate third-quarter S&P 500 earnings growth of 31.0%, year-on-year, per LSEG. Caterpillar CAT topped quarterly profit estimates but left its growth targets unchanged. The heavy equipment maker's shares tumbled 9.3%. Eli Lilly LLY jumped 6.6% after the drugmaker lifted its revenue outlook on strong sales of weight-loss drugs. Ford F gained 12.4% following the automaker's third-quarter revenue beat. Merck MRK beat earnings expectations on the strength of its cancer drug Keytruda and its HPV vaccine Gardasil. The drugmaker's shares advanced 3.8%. Software stocks were broadly weak. Fortinet FTNT and ServiceNow NOW both dropped more than 20% after reporting their quarterly results. Marvell Technology MRVL slumped 13.2% after media reports said the company was in advanced talks to buy data-center optics maker Lumentum Holdings LITE . Lumentum shares rose 0.6%. Amazon AMZN dropped 6.5% in extended trading after it provided disappointing fourth-quarter sales guidance. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.95-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 146 new highs and 201 new lows on the NYSE. On the Nasdaq, 2,464 stocks rose and 2,308 fell as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.07-to-1 ratio. The S&P 500 posted 19 new 52-week highs and 6 new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 88 new highs and 191 new lows. Volume on US exchanges was 17.05 billion shares, compared with the 17.09 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
