BoJ decision due shortly: hold at 1.25% expected, December signal in focu
Stocks slump, bonds leap as AI giants' spending spooks investors. Tech shares slumped in Asia on Friday, the yen rose and bonds surged toward their biggest monthly gain in nearly three years as investors scurried to safety against worries that huge and rising AI spending may not deliver sufficient returns. Shares in Google parent Alphabet GOOG fell 12.6% on Wall Street and slid a little further after hours, to wipe out a withering $500 billion in market value, as massive AI spending turned the company's cash flow negative. An aftermarket plunge of 23% in Intel shares INTC and a drop of 7% in Amazon AMZN stocks, as they too burn through cash, drove Nasdaq 100 futures NQ1! down 1.4% and sent stocks of chipmakers around Asia into a tailspin. "The market isn't necessarily questioning whether the AI buildout can be financed," said Pepperstone analyst Chris Weston. "It's increasingly questioning whether shareholders will earn an adequate return on the enormous capital being deployed." Nerves were also frayed by a potentially record-breaking hack at Binance, the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchange, which drove down bitcoin BTCUSD , other cryptocurrency prices and stocks including rival exchange Coinbase COIN . South Korea's KOSPI KOSPI slumped 5% for an October fall of more than 17%. Japan's Nikkei NI225 fell 3%. In China, the blue chip CSI300 3 399300 headed for its largest monthly fall in a decade, after nearly four months of AI stocks tanking on fears that a slowdown in demand for chips and other data centre equipment could crush revenues. BOJ EXPECTED TO HOLD Investors' rush into bonds was further spurred further by the Federal Reserve's Wednesday decision to keep US interest rates on hold, with no firm projection of when it might need to hike next. Benchmark 10-year US Treasury yields US10Y fell by more than 7 basis points in Tokyo trade on Friday to 4.91% for a fall of some 37 bps through October — the largest one-month drop since December 2023. Two-year yields (US2YT=RR) dropped by more than 8 bps to 4.57% and Fed funds futures rallied as investors dialled back some expectations for US rate hikes. Yields fall when bond prices rise. The Bank of Japan is expected to leave rates on hold later on Friday in a decision that will cap a week of major central bank meetings. The risk-averse mood strengthened haven currencies such as the yen and Swiss franc, with the yen USDJPY up about 0.2% at 157.47 per dollar and the franc USDCHF at 0.8213 to the dollar and not far from a one-month high. The euro EURUSD inched up 0.1% to $1.1194. "Key to watch will be how BOJ characterise the recent global bond market volatility," said Howe Chung Wan, head of Asian fixed income at Principal Asset Management. Investors would watch for how the moves influenced the bank's assessment of the current status of monetary policy, and whether it remains accommodative or is close to approaching neutral, he added. "This will guide the market for the pace and extent of further tightening in 2027."

Microsoft expects to raise $25 billion in US bond sale, says report. Microsoft is planning to raise about $25 billion through its first US investment-grade bond sale in more than nine years, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday. The bond sale would make Microsoft the latest tech giant to tap into debt markets to fuel its AI ambitions and had gathered more than $100 billion of orders, or over four times the size of the offering, one of the people said, requesting anonymity as the matter was confidential. Bloomberg News first reported the development. The world's largest tech firms have turned to selling bonds and raising equity over the past year to pay for their AI spending spree, a shift in approach for the Silicon Valley giants that have typically relied on their large coffers to fund investments. Microsoft is selling the debt in as many as 10 tranches, with maturities ranging from 2 to 40 years, Bloomberg reported, adding that no final decision had been made on the offering's size and that it may change according to demand. Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase and UBS Group AG are managing the bond offering, according to the report. UBS, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan declined Reuters' requests for comment. Microsoft pointed Reuters to a regulatory filing that confirms the bond sale without disclosing the size of the sale. The report comes just a day after Microsoft CFO Amy Hood told investors on an earnings call that the company would pursue additional sources of funding "when we believe it is attractive to do so", citing the need to preserve its cash flows and financial flexibility. Microsoft shares fell 0.7% in afternoon trading. The company issued an upbeat current-quarter cloud sales outlook after hours on Wednesday. The company expects to keep generating positive free cash flow in its current fiscal year that runs through June 2027 — making it a standout among Big Tech and hyperscaler peers, which have all started burning through cash to fund their data-center buildout. Investors punished rival Alphabet on Wednesday as it burned $9.07 billion in the third quarter, after selling off Meta last week following the Facebook parent's first cash burn in more than a decade.

BINANCE'S HACK MAY BE THE BIGGEST CYBER HEIST IN HISTORY Chainalysis estimates $5.9B was stolen from the crypto exchange, and TRM Labs estimates more than $6B, per WSJ. Neither figure is confirmed by Binance. The previous record was $1.5B, stolen from crypto exchange Bybit in 2025 by North Korea-linked hackers. Binance has suspended all deposits and withdrawals. Tether and Circle have frozen about $3B of the stolen assets, according to Binance, which says user funds are safe.

Asian Stocks Fall as Alphabet's Slide Weighs on Tech. By Megan Cheah Asian stocks declined Friday, tracking losses on Wall Street, as a revenue shortfall from Google parent Alphabet drove investors to trim their technology holdings. The company, a major hyperscaler in the artificial-intelligence boom, lost half a trillion in market value on Thursday after Google's search revenue growth in the third quarter waned due to the less-lucrative nature of AI searches. "Enthusiasm for artificial intelligence can sustain high expectations, but results must demonstrate progress in profitability and cash generation," said Antonio Di Giacomo, senior market analyst at XS.com. "In this environment, the market can punish even substantial revenue growth when earnings disappoint, or investment requirements continue to rise." Alphabet's plunged weighed on U.S. technology stocks, and the selloff appears likely to continue, with stock futures tied to the tech-heavy Nasdaq declining 2.4% in Asia. These losses also spilled over into Asia. South Korea's Kospi slid 5.2%, with index heavyweight chip makers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix dropping 5.5% and 9.0%, respectively. The former extended Thursday's declines after posting third-quarter results, while the latter appears to be on track to snap a five-session winning streak. The Korea Exchange briefly suspended trading of Kospi stocks after futures tied to the index fell more than 5%. Shares of Japan's Softbank Group Corp., a prominent AI investor, slid 7.1%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average fell 2.75%, Taiwan's Taiex shed 3.0% and China's Shanghai Composite Index dropped 1.25%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was an outlier, rising 0.7%, while the city's tech gauge added 0.4%. Oil rose as traders weighed fresh efforts to revive peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran against persistent Middle East supply risks and the potential for a renewed escalation in the conflict. "The physical constraints keeping the oil market tight are unlikely to dissipate before year-end," said ANZ Research strategists. Buffers that absorbed the initial shock of disrupted supply from the conflict have been drawn down, tanker availability has tightened and alternative export routes have been stretched, they said. Exports from the Persian Gulf also appear to be weakening, while the effective surplus capacity of oil cartel OPEC was estimated to be zero under current logistical constraints, they added. ANZ Research raised its year-end Brent forecast to $105 a barrel from $95 a barrel, but said the revision doesn't assume another escalation in Middle East hostilities. Front-month West Texas Intermediate crude-oil futures rose 1.0% to $103.04 a barrel, while front-month Brent gained 1.0% to $116.00 a barrel. Gold declined, with the spot price last down 0.4% at $4,004.89 a troy ounce. Expectations of tighter monetary policy across major economies are supporting bond yields and pressuring the precious metal, said Infinox's Thadeu Dos Santos in a note. A higher interest-rate environment typically weighs on nonyielding assets such as gold. Write to Megan Cheah at megan.cheah@wsj.com
