Intel's Capacity Relief Timeline Under Scrutiny — Market Talk. Intel's commentary around server supply growth doesn't provide a fully satisfying answer as to why the company continues to forecast meaningful relief in the second half of 2027, StoneX analyst Cody Acree writes in a note. "If server demand has been visible and expanding, and increasing server supply has been a management priority, the fact that the larger revenue step still waits until 2H27 suggests the constraint cannot be explained by a single late-arriving component," Acree writes. "The relevant question is not whether wafer, substrate and assembly lead times are real - they are - but why the combined system was not positioned earlier to respond to demand that management describes as unusually strong." There's more execution risk around capacity that Intel's confidence suggests, he adds. Shares fall 30% to $64.69. (elias.schisgall@wsj.com)

Amazon, Intel Earnings Add Fuel to Tech Selloff — WSJ. By Ed Ballard The tech selloff is intensifying this morning after results from Amazon and Intel compounded worries around the AI trade. The Nasdaq composite slumped more than 2%. Shares of Amazon dropped; its earnings were in line with the company's forecasts - and showed booming cloud-computing growth - but left the market wanting more. Intel shares, meanwhile, are having their worst day ever after the memory-chip crunch and other hiccups weighed on PC sales. The AI worry comes with a side order of crypto angst in the wake of a massive cyberattack on Binance. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are trading lower after hackers made off with an estimated $6.3 billion from an attack on the crypto exchange. Binance suspended transactions and said users will be made whole. Meanwhile, oil is up after more strikes in the Middle East and Russia. Brent crude climbed to about $113 after a tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz came under attack, according to U.K. Maritime Trade Operations. Ukraine struck an oil refinery in Russia, ending a pause that the Trump administration had pushed for. Source: Employment Cost Index 【回复上下文:Nick Timiraos @NickTimiraos · 2026-10-30T15:56:41.000Z】 Meantime, the ECI shows a sharp rise in health insurance costs pushing up U.S. employers’ benefit costs, even as growth in wages and salaries slows. Wage growth has slowed to 3.1% as of Q3, while benefit costs are up 3.9%. Benefit cost growth has traditionally run slightly below wages, but now it is running slightly above them. This means workers are getting less of their compensation as pay and more in insurance premiums, which are driven mostly by things outside of employers' control. This raises a few questions: Do higher fixed costs for workers on health coverage lead businesses to hire more cautiously (or shift to part-time workers who don't get benefits)? And note: if employers respond by passing more costs onto workers through higher premiums or less coverage, the ECI won't capture this.

Intel Seen Losing CPU Share in 2027 — Market Talk. Morgan Stanley analysts don't find the Intel investment case compelling, even after PC softness in the third quarter triggers a 29% drop in the stock price. Beyond the third-quarter weakness, Intel failed to deliver what the analysts say would build more confidence in the stock: a path to leadership in the CPU market. "Intel describes 2027 as an investment year, but even with the high capital spending requirements, it is clear to us that it will lose share to fabless competitors that have no such requirement, with AMD, NVIDIA, Graviton and Axion all materially outgrowing Intel's 30% market growth rate in CPU next year," the analysts write. Intel's multiple should be dampened if the CPU shortage is temporary, they add. (elias.schisgall@wsj.com)

Meta Faces U.K. Antitrust Probe Over Publisher Content Terms — Update. By Edith Hancock Meta Platforms faces an investigation from the U.K.'s competition regulator over potential new business terms that would allow the company to collect content from publishers to power its own products such as artificial intelligence tools. The Competition and Markets Authority said Friday that Meta's now-paused terms could unfairly harm publishers and advertisers that use its services like Instagram. Publishers have hit out at tech giants in recent months over how they scrape content to train and run tools like AI chatbots. In the U.S., a group of publishers filed a class-action suit against Meta in May that alleged the company accessed millions of books and journal articles from pirating sites to train its AI platform Llama. Regulators have also grown concerned about AI companies' use of media. The European Commission started probing Google in December 2025 over how it uses content online to train its own services such as AI Overviews, which summarize search results. That followed a legal complaint alleging that the company unfairly directed traffic away from news websites. The U.K.'s CMA also imposed an obligation on Google this year to let publishers opt out of feeding their content to power its AI features in online searches. Meta's planned terms could enable the company to use content from publishers' websites without offering them a choice over if or how it is used, according to the CMA. The tech giant had originally planned to introduce the changes on Friday, but has since paused the rollout pending talks with industry groups, the CMA said. A Meta spokesperson said in a statement that there are no grounds for an investigation. "We've already committed not to change our terms without consulting publishers and other stakeholders," the spokesperson said. The investigation follows formal complaints from trade groups this month. Theo Bamber, chief executive of trade body News Media Association, welcomed the CMA's investigation on Friday, saying Meta gave publishers "an invidious choice of giving away their content for free to power its AI products or leaving a platform which millions of Britons use to get their news." News UK, a member of the association, is wholly owned by News Corp, which is the parent company of Dow Jones & Co., publisher of The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires. Tim Cowen, co-founder of Movement for an Open Web, whose members include publishers and advertisers, called the delay and the CMA's probe a "significant win for the wider industry" in a statement Friday, but said regulators should do more to clamp down on what he referred to as anti-competitive practices. Meta had previously delayed the changes to the terms to Nov. 20 after industry groups complained to both the CMA and the European Commission's competition division. The regulator said no decision has yet been made over whether Meta broke U.K. competition law. News Corp has a commercial agreement to supply content on Google platforms. Sandisk Has More Demand Than It Can Supply Through 2030, Analyst Says. Sandisk Corp. SNDK stock fell about 10% Friday as a broader technology sell-off weighed on high-growth stocks. The Nasdaq Composite declined 2.85%, while the S&P 500 lost 1.41%. Despite the decline, Sandisk continues to benefit from stronger data center demand, higher pricing and improving long-term revenue visibility as artificial intelligence drives storage demand. Rosenblatt analyst Kevin Cassidy maintained a Buy rating and a $2,400 price forecast , based on 10 times his fiscal 2028 non-GAAP earnings-per-share estimate. Data Center Demand Fuels Growth Cassidy said Sandisk reported stronger-than-expected fiscal first-quarter results, with revenue surging 378% year over year and 23% sequentially to $11.03 billion. Revenue topped his $10.55 billion estimate and the $10.72 billion consensus . Adjusted earnings reached $49.51 per share, exceeding Cassidy’s $45.80 estimate and the $46.67 consensus. Data center revenue jumped 1,682% year over year and 61% sequentially to $4.80 billion, making it the primary growth driver. Sandisk also reported a non-GAAP gross margin of 85.1% and adjusted free cash flow of $5.7 billion. Long-Term Contracts Strengthen Revenue Visibility Cassidy said Sandisk’s New Business Model agreements are performing better than expected. The company has secured agreements with eight customers covering about 50% of fiscal 2027 bit production and roughly two-thirds of fiscal 2028 production. The contracts represent $93.9 billion in minimum committed revenue. Cassidy said Sandisk’s pipeline of potential New Business Model agreements exceeds its available supply through the end of the decade, signaling sustained demand for its memory products. He added that 95% of existing agreements are with investment-grade customers, strengthening confidence in long-term revenue visibility. Cassidy said demand from prospective agreements exceeds available supply through the end of the decade. He expects contracted coverage to increase as Sandisk signs new customers and extends existing agreements. AI Creates New Storage Opportunities Cassidy identified AI inference as another significant growth opportunity. He expects growing adoption of triple-level cell (TLC) and quad-level cell (QLC) enterprise solid-state drives, along with key-value (KV) cache tiering, to expand NAND flash storage demand in data centers. Sandisk expects KV cache to account for roughly one-third of the AI data center flash market by the end of the decade. Cassidy also highlighted the company’s BiCS technology roadmap and emerging high-bandwidth flash (HBF) technology, with initial HBF samples expected in 2027. Analyst Raises Earnings Forecasts Cassidy raised his fiscal second-quarter revenue estimate to $12.40 billion from $12.20 billion and his adjusted EPS estimate to $56.90 from $52.98 . For fiscal 2027, he increased his revenue forecast to $49.48 billion from $48.80 billion and his adjusted EPS forecast to $221.28 from $210. For fiscal 2028, Cassidy maintained his $60 billion revenue estimate but raised his adjusted EPS forecast to $247.71 from $240. Sandisk forecast fiscal second-quarter revenue of $12.2 billion to $12.6 billion and adjusted EPS of $55 to $57, exceeding Cassidy’s previous estimates. Cassidy also said Sandisk expects data center NAND bit demand to grow about 40% in 2027. However, the company plans to maintain disciplined bit production growth in the mid-to-high teens rather than aggressively expand capacity. SNDK Price Action: Sandisk shares were down 10.21% at $1,194.29 at the time of publication Friday, according to Benzinga Pro data .

GE Vernova vs. Caterpillar: Wall Street Splinters on the AI Power Trade — Barrons.com. By Al Root After a chaotic week, Wall Street can't get its story straight on power generation equipment for AI. HSBC analyst Sean McLoughlin on Friday upgraded shares of GE Vernova to Buy from Hold, citing higher pricing and profit margins from strong demand for power-generating equipment. His price target went to $1,100 from $1,040. Mizuho analyst Maheep Mandloi also raised his price target to $959 from $949, following GE Vernova's "3Q26 beat and raise" quarter. GE Vernova reported third-quarter results on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Baird analyst Mig Dobre cut his Caterpillar price target to $729 from $970, noting the company's third-quarter earnings "beat," but citing that growth is decelerating. "Good becoming less good usually results in valuation compression and a lower stock price," wrote Dobre. "One might say the AI super-cycle makes such old world frameworks irrelevant, yet for cyclical stocks such as Cat, they are not." He still has questions about the durability to AI data center demand that sent shares north of $1,000 in June. Opinions are diverging on what is essentially the same issue. Both stocks are tied to the AI trade, selling power-generating equipment to AI data centers. Cat, of course, also sells heavy machinery. (Some of that is used to build AI data centers.) Wall Street seems more apt to Buy the dip in GE Vernova stock than opt for Cat. Valuation doesn't seem to justify that position. GE Vernova trades for about 32 times earnings expected over the coming 12 months. Cat stock trades for 20 times. Of course, valuation is a function of expected earnings growth. But Cat is expected to grow earnings per share close to 20% a year for the coming three years, according to FactSet, a few percentage points better than GE Vernova. Whether to buy or sell Cat or GE Vernova stocks is beside the point. Wall Street is starting to get more nervous about the AI trade after a set of weak earnings from Alphabet, Intel, and Amazon.com. AI fears overwhelmed the GE Vernova upgrade. Shares were down 2.5% in early trading, while the S&P 500 dropped 1.3%. Cat shares were down 1.9%. Write to Al Root at allen.root@barrons.com.
