$ANT - ANTHROPIC FACES JUNK CREDIT RATING RISK DESPITE PLANNED MEGA-IPO Blackstone has warned investors that Anthropic may receive a below-investment-grade credit rating following its IPO, reversing earlier expectations, according to the Financial Times. The AI company is reportedly expected to receive a BB-range rating, potentially raising borrowing costs and limiting access to institutional capital. Anthropic plans to spend over $800 billion on computing infrastructure through 2045, while its $63 billion Project North Star financing relies heavily on guarantees from investment-grade-rated Broadcom. The company reportedly holds over $112 billion in cash and could raise another $100 billion through its IPO. Source: Financial Times

Chip Stocks Wipe Out $1 Trillion in Friday Bloodbath: 5 Stocks Alone Account for 60% of the Damage. Semiconductor stocks lost roughly $1 trillion in market value on Friday, and just five companies did most of the damage . By 11:35 a.m. ET, 23 of the world’s largest chipmakers and equipment suppliers had shed about $1.01 trillion across Wall Street and Asia. Nvidia Corp. NVDA , Intel Corp. INTC , Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD , Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. TSM and Broadcom Inc. AVGO alone accounted for $610 billion of that, or about 60%. The trigger was Intel. Its shares plunged 28.4% to $65.92 after the chipmaker’s fourth-quarter outlook landed well short of expectations. If the drop holds, it would be the stock’s steepest one-day fall since July 1974. Five Chip Stocks Drove 60% of the Selloff Nvidia led in dollar terms. Its shares fell only 3.6%, yet that move erased about $185 billion, because Nvidia is worth close to $5 trillion. Intel fell nearly eight times as hard in percentage terms. However, it lost less money, about $138 billion. TSMC dropped 5.4%, wiping out roughly $108 billion. Broadcom slid 5.5% and AMD sank 9.7%, and each shed about $90 billion. Company Change Market value lost Nvidia Corp. NVDA -3.6% $185 billion Intel Corp. INTC -28.4% $138 billion Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. TSM -5.4% $108 billion Broadcom Inc. AVGO -5.5% $90 billion Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD -9.7% $90 billion Top five combined $610 billion Elsewhere, SK Hynix Inc. SKHY closed 7.1% lower in Seoul, erasing about $64 billion. Micron Technology Inc. MU , down 5.2%, lost $55 billion. The iShares Semiconductor ETF SOXX tumbled 8%, on track for its worst day since early June. The PHLX Semiconductor Index fell 7.1%, its second drop of more than 6% in just over a week. Intel’s AI Boom Has a Supply Problem Intel’s Data Center and AI division grew revenue 78% to $7.3 billion in the third quarter, its fastest growth in 15 years. However, shortages of wafers and substrates are capping server shipments, and relief is not expected until the second half of 2027. Meanwhile, the PC business is shrinking. Intel guided fourth-quarter revenue to $15 billion to $16 billion, below the roughly $17.1 billion analysts expected. It also warned the slowdown would last through the first half of 2027. The culprit is high memory-chip prices. These are the same prices that lifted SK Hynix, Micron and Sandisk Corp. SNDK this year. Now they are making PCs too expensive to sell in volume. “Intel’s forward outlook proved to be a perfect storm,” Cantor Fitzgerald analyst C.J. Muse said in a note. He called the implied 45% year-over-year collapse in PC units a meaningful surprise. He also cut his price target to $90 from $125 and kept a Neutral rating. Bank of America Securities analyst Vivek Arya downgraded Intel to Neutral from Buy and cut his price objective to $100 from $145. Arya said strong demand for server processors tied to agentic AI is more than offset by PC and supply headwinds. Why the Whole Sector Paid On Thursday, Alphabet Inc. GOOG suffered its worst day on record. On Friday, Amazon.com Inc. AMZN fell 1.3% after its third-quarter revenue came in slightly below estimates. As a result, investors are again questioning when the hundreds of billions spent on AI infrastructure will pay off. Dan Ives of Yorkville Ives said on X that AI’s disruption is now visible in tech earnings. He still sees 2027 as the year AI revenue starts to justify the spending. The Nasdaq 100 fell 2.9%, and the S&P 500 lost 1.4%. The 10-year Treasury yield edged up to 4.95%, while the 30-year yield rose 2 basis points to 5.32%. Five stocks generated 60% of Friday’s chip losses. The same concentration that lifted semiconductor indexes on the way up is now working in reverse.

Black Friday Came Early for Chipmakers: Intel and 10 Other Stocks Are More Than 20% Off This Month. Black Friday usually arrives at the end of November. For chip stocks, it likely came four weeks early . Eleven semiconductor stocks have lost more than 20% of their value in October alone, with Intel Corp. INTC leading the markdown at 45%. Yet the discount comes with a catch. Ten of those 11 stocks are still trading above where they started the year. Intel itself remains up 74% in 2026, even after Friday’s collapse. So is Wall Street looking at a genuine sale, or at price tags that are only starting to adjust? Intel’s Warning Turned a Chip Pullback Into a Clearance Sale The iShares Semiconductor ETF SOXX is down 16.5% in October, including a 7.6% drop on Friday. Intel fell 28.6% to about $65.77 by mid-morning Friday, erasing roughly $140 billion in market value. The company guided fourth-quarter revenue to $15 billion to $16 billion, below the roughly $17 billion Wall Street expected, and sees PC chip sales falling more than 20% sequentially. “The third quarter hasn’t been good for hyperscalers, and that is starting to weigh heavily on AI-adjacent stocks,” David Morrison, senior market analyst at Trade Nation, wrote in a note Friday. The AI Boom Is Now Taxing the Rest of the Chip Aisle The mechanism runs through memory. Memory makers are shifting capacity toward the high-bandwidth chips that feed AI servers, so ordinary DRAM gets scarcer and pricier. As a result, laptops cost more to build, and PC makers order fewer processors. The same AI spending that lifts one part of the chip business is draining demand from another. Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya downgraded Intel to Neutral from Buy on Friday and cut its price objective to $100 from $145, saying the “turnaround pushed out on PC/supply headwinds.” “Houston, we have a problem,” Cantor Fitzgerald’s C.J. Muse wrote, blaming memory, wafer and substrate shortages. He cut his target to $90 and models 2027 earnings of $1.65 per share, below the $2.13 consensus. Intel carries a Neutral consensus from 32 analysts tracked by Benzinga Analyst Ratings , with an average price target of $104. Every Discount Has Its Own Label Cerebras Systems Inc. CBRS slid after short seller Culper Research alleged its wafer-sized AI chips last only 1.5 to 2.5 years in the field. United Microelectronics Corp. UMC missed third-quarter estimates, while Teradyne Inc. TER guided fourth-quarter revenue roughly flat. Muse still backs Teradyne. “Make no mistake about it, our work continues to support meaningful upside to the SOC Test market from here,” he wrote. Marvell Technology Inc. MRVL sank 13.2% Thursday on reports it is in advanced talks to buy Lumentum Holdings Inc. LITE in an all-stock deal worth about $83 billion. Friday’s Intel shock hit the rest. Arm Holdings plc ARM , whose designs sit inside phones and laptops, fell 10.5%. Tower Semiconductor Ltd. TSEM , Astera Labs Inc. ALAB and Credo Technology Group Holding Ltd. CRDO lost between 9% and 12%. Equipment makers Lam Research Corp. LRCX and Applied Materials Inc. AMAT fell too. After Intel's historic stock drop, analysts say there's no reason to buy the dip. By Britney Nguyen 'A cheaper stock does not necessarily offer better value,' one expert says Intel, led by CEO Lip-Bu Tan, disappointed investors with its latest forecast. Even in the wake of what could be Intel's worst daily stock drop in decades, some analysts say investors should steer clear. "A cheaper stock does not necessarily offer better value," Dan Kemp, founder of investment consultancy Portfolio Thinking, told MarketWatch. Intel's (INTC) earnings report on Thursday afternoon shed light on various problems, including a dramatically weakening market for personal-computer chips and a server business that's leaving money on the table because it can't meet all its demand. Intel is also losing money on an expensive chip-manufacturing business that remains a work in progress. Seaport Research analyst Jay Goldberg thinks that Intel "will sort itself out" eventually, but its comeback "is taking too long." The company's current challenges, which partly stem from poor foresight into market conditions that has left the company without enough manufacturing capacity for its critical AI server chips, have put a dent in the turnaround efforts undertaken by CEO Lip-Bu Tan. Goldberg, who just lowered his rating on Intel to neutral from buy, said he sees "no reason to own the stock" as the company works through its issues. Intel's 29% stock drop as of midday Friday puts it on pace for its worst one-day decline since at least 1980, according to Dow Jones Market Data. It also draws flashbacks to August 2024, when Intel shares shed 26% in a single day upon suspending its dividend and beginning a massive cost-cutting program. To the company's credit, Intel is in better shape than it was two years ago, Goldberg said. Its chip-manufacturing technology is gaining traction with customers and producing better yields, he said, referring to the amount of usable chips that come from a single wafer. The commentary around its chip-manufacturing business "gives us further confidence that Intel Foundry will be viable, some day," Goldberg said in a note to clients. That prospect alone may not be reason to buy into Intel's stock now, however. Intel on Thursday said that persistent weakness in demand for PCs, spurred by rising memory prices, was partly to blame for a forecast that came short of what analysts had been expecting. There are also constraints throughout its supply chain, the company noted, including for chip wafers and packaging substrates - an essential component for its advanced chip packaging technology that is gaining appeal with customers. Intel had indicated the previous quarter it was getting back on track with supply, Goldberg said - but the third-quarter results showed that hasn't happened. While Intel has upped production of client wafers for the PC market, which "is seeing its worst downturn" in more than a decade, it is facing shortages of wafers for data-center server central processing units to support an artificial-intelligence market that "is seeing its greatest cycle ever," he noted. "Where they really lost us was management's commentary that supply would not come into balance until the middle of next year," he said, also noting that Intel said its investments in long-term assets to benefit the business could weigh on its cash flow, or the money it generates after that spending and operating expenses. Although the stock's steep drop on Friday follows its less-than-stellar report, it also has to do with investors realizing "the size of the mountain Intel must climb over the next decade to justify its previous valuation," Portfolio Thinking's Kemp said. At Intel's current valuation, the market needs Intel Foundry to bring in $14 billion a year, Kemp said - a high mark for a business that has lost money for several consecutive quarters and generated external revenue of just $411 million in the September quarter. While the selloff could look like a bargain to some investors, Kemp said its important to distinguish between that and a discount. Indeed, Intel shares now trade at 35.9x estimated forward earnings, down from 43.8x heading into the report on Thursday, according to Dow Jones Market Data. But the earnings also made investors call into question trends like its ability to capitalize appropriately on a wave of demand for server CPUs, something that had previously helped drive its valuation higher. Richard Windsor, founder of research firm Radio Free Mobile, shared similar caution about the stock given his view that while Tan has made progress on a turnaround, "he is not out of the woods yet." The stock's high valuation, Intel's weak projections for next year and the ongoing debate over the dominance of its x86 chip architecture "leaves me cautious on the shares," Windsor said in a note to clients. Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya also lowered his rating on Intel's stock to neutral from a previous buy position. Intel's PC weakness "more than" offsets the strength it is showing in its data-center and AI segment, Arya said in a note to clients. And even as it benefits from AI-driven demand for server CPUs, Intel faces component-supply issues there, while its offerings "are not yet technically competitive" with those from CPU rivals Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Arm (ARM), according to Arya. -Britney Nguyen This content was created by MarketWatch, which is operated by Dow Jones & Co. Intel's Plunge Today Makes It October's Worst S&P 500 Stock. Accenture Is the Month's Big Winner. — Barrons.com. By Ty Roush and Mariapaula Gonzalez It took one day for Intel to become the S&P 500's worst-performing stock in October. Other stocks had a much better month. Intel shares plummeted 29% on Friday to $65.58 after the chip maker reported mixed third-quarter earnings and issued a disappointing outlook for the current quarter. The stock has fallen 45% in October, putting it on pace for its worst month on record, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The plunge Friday accounted for much of the damage. Intel shares had declined only 23% for the month through Thursday's close of trading. Soaring memory chip costs have weighed on Intel's PC market, and the company characterized 2027 as an "investment year" while warning it doesn't expect positive free cash flow. Reddit was October's second-worst-performing stock in the S&P 500, falling 34%. Much like Intel, most of its losses came Friday when shares plunged 28% after the company reported weaker-than-expected third-quarter user growth. The stock had been down just 9% for the month through Thursday. Teradyne, Twilio, and Sandisk rounded out the S&P 500's five worst performers in October as concerns about artificial-intelligence spending and lofty valuations pressured technology stocks. On the positive side, Accenture was the best S&P 500 performer in October. Shares surged nearly 40% across the month, tracking toward their best monthly performance on record, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The stock rose 4.3% to $257.96 on Friday. Accenture kicked off the month with a bang, posting its largest single-day percentage gain ever on Oct. 1, following its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report. The numbers knocked it out of the park: Rising new bookings provided overdue relief that artificial intelligence won't dampen the consulting business as widely feared. Accenture's latest earnings marked a sharp turnaround after several quarters of revenue stagnation, sluggish bookings, and persistent skepticism around AI's impact on legacy IT consulting budgets. Jefferies analyst Surinder Thind called the quarterly report "better than feared," citing robust consulting revenue and bookings momentum. The firm has a Hold rating on the stock with a $220 price target. Even with the rally, Accenture stock has fallen 4.9% this year as of the closing bell Thursday. But a key growth opportunity could lie in AI as the company has expanded into AI safety and high-profile partnerships with Anthropic and Alphabet's Google. But not everyone on Wall Street was on the same page. Even with Accenture shares nearly doubling since June, Baird downgraded the stock to Neutral from Outperform last week while raising its price target to $252 from $245. Though the firm said the monthslong stock rally was "warranted," the analysts warned current valuations already have priced in that recovery. Accenture trades at 16 times forward earnings, below its historical average of 23 times, Baird noted. The firm projects annual organic revenue to grow 3% to 4% through fiscal 2029, down from an average of 8% from fiscal 2014 through 2023. Right behind Accenture among the best S&P 500 performers were PTC Inc., Hasbro, Crown Castle, and Equifax. St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem: "I judge that additional firming of monetary policy will be necessary, and soon." He outlines two scenarios for inflation. Scenario 1, which he says is more likely: Inflation stays too high unless the Fed raises rates further. Scenario 2, which he says is less likely but plausible: No more hikes needed. Under this scenario, the economy sees some combination of falling energy prices and lower shipping costs; AI and data-center spending pulls back sharply; or financial conditions tighten suddenly, leading to slower consumer spending driven by wealth effects.
