Intel shares slump on weak Q4 guidance, ongoing PC slowdown. For the third quarter, Intel posted adjusted earnings per share of $0.52, ahead of the $0.40 expected, on $16.51bn of revenues, broadly in line with forecasts and up 21% from $13.7bn a year earlier. However, revenues in its client computing and physical AI division fell 5% year‑on‑year to $8.1bn, missing estimates, even as data‑centre and AI revenue surged 78% to $7.3bn. Intel also noted that global PC shipments dropped 4% in Q2 amid sharply higher component costs. Intel guided to Q4 adjusted EPS of $0.25 on revenues of $15bn to $16bn, well below analyst expectations of $0.43 and $17.1bn. Finance chief David Zinsner said the PC downturn was likely to continue "at least through the first half of next year", adding that Intel would keep investing "disciplinedly" in capacity and working capital to support future growth. The California-based firm's outlook also reflected the impact of an explosion at an Israeli fabrication plant earlier in October that killed two workers and injured another. Zinsner said the incident would reduce revenues by around $600m over two quarters. As of 1140 GMT, Intel shares were down 25.65% in pre-market trading at $68.45 each. Intel, Amazon, Reddit, Chevron, Exxon, and More Stocks That Explain Today's Market — Barrons.com. By Adam Clark Stock futures were mixed on Monday as technology shares sold off on the back of earnings but oil companies benefited from surging profits, fueled by the Iran conflict. Intel stock was falling 25% after underwhelming guidance surprised the market, following a fatal explosion at one of its facilities. Its weak forecast for the PC market was dragging down peers Dell Technologies and HP. Amazon.com was down 6.3% after third-quarter earnings came in below Wall Street's expectations on the back of revenue from retail and advertising. Reddit fell 19% after its earnings showed weaker-than-expected user growth as traffic trends continue to face pressures from Google search updates. The tech selloff was taking down cloud-computing companies with CoreWeave and Nebius Group dropping more than 7%. Chip stocks were also suffering with Advanced Micro Devices down nearly 8%. But things were brighter for oil companies. ExxonMobil was rising 1.6% and Chevron was gaining 1.2% after both banked huge third-quarter profits. Intel Valuation Hard to Justify Amid PC Weakness — Market Talk. Intel's valuation is difficult to justify when weakness in the personal-computing market is so significant, Davidson analysts write. Revenue in the group's client computing division, coming in 9% below Wall Street estimates, the analysts note. The decline was a result of Intel's customers reducing their PC inventories as they adjusted to lower consumer demand. "Much of the weakness can be attributed to industry factors such as memory prices," they say. The analysts lower their target price on the stock to $70 from $100. Intel shares slide more than 26% premarket, and are on track for their worst one-day performance on record. (josephmichael.stonor@wsj.com)

Intel warning sparks chip rout as PC weakness clouds turnaround. By Anhata Rooprai Intel's INTC shares slumped 25% in premarket trading after the chipmaker forecast a bleak quarter and warned of persistent weakness in the personal computer market through at least the first half of 2027, sparking a selloff in global chip stocks. The decline puts the US chipmaker, which forecast fourth-quarter revenue and profit below Wall Street expectations, on track to lose more than $123 billion in market value and open at its lowest level in about six months if losses hold through the regular trading session. The forecast underscores the challenges facing CEO Lip-Bu Tan's turnaround effort, with Intel still grappling with a prolonged PC market slump even as it invests heavily in AI and manufacturing expansion. Semiconductor stocks, including Advanced Micro Devices AMD , Arm Holdings ARM , Qualcomm QCOM , Nvidia NVDA , Broadcom AVGO and Micron MU , fell between 2% and 9% in premarket trading. The STOXX Europe 600 Technology Index (.SX8P) was down 2.1%, with sector heavyweight ASML ASML shedding 5.2%. US-listed shares of the world's largest contract chipmaker, TSMC 2330 , were down 3.5%. Intel expects fourth-quarter revenue of $15 billion to $16 billion, below analysts' average estimate of $17.07 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Finance chief David Zinsner also said Intel does not expect positive cash flow this year. MEMORY CRUNCH BITES Higher memory prices, driven by suppliers shifting capacity toward AI-focused high-bandwidth memory chips, are raising PC costs and weighing on already weak consumer demand. PC chips accounted for roughly half of Intel's third-quarter revenue, and the company expects sales from the segment to decline more than 20% sequentially this quarter after a 5% drop in the September period. "It will be important to see if Intel can expand the highly profitable Xeon product supply to help offset this developing weakness in PC," said Brian Mulberry, chief market strategist at Zacks Investment Management. "Bottom line, weaker sales volumes, higher manufacturing costs, and an out-of-cycle product mix is a recipe for the stock to decline over the near term as future earnings are under a lot of pressure."

Trump Administration Moves to Block Chinese Telecom Firms From Accessing US Phone Numbers Amid Robocall Threats: Report. The Trump administration is reportedly preparing a new national security measure aimed at limiting Chinese telecom companies’ access to American phone numbers and disrupting scam-related robocalls. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is scheduled to vote Nov. 19 on a proposal that could block China Mobile , China Telecom , China Unicom and other internet-based providers from directly accessing U.S. phone numbers, Reuters reported on Thursday. For telecom companies providing Voice over Internet Protocol, direct access is a cheaper option and makes it easier to offer advanced features, the report added. The agency said restricting that access would reinforce protections against illegal robocalls. The agency may revoke existing direct-number authorizations for Chinese companies considered security risks, according to the report. The FCC has already prohibited the three named telecom providers from offering international telecommunications services to the U.S. FCC Chair Brendan Carr told the publication that the decision would strengthen the agency’s "first line of defense" against "bad actors and illegal robocallers." The FCC also intends to limit providers that use equipment from companies on its national security risk list, including Huawei and ZTE . Chinese laboratories could additionally be barred from testing U.S. electronics beginning in December 2028. China’s foreign ministry said Friday that it firmly opposed the expected ban, accusing Washington of broadening national security justifications and using government authority to suppress Chinese companies. FCC did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comments. US Expands Scrutiny Of Chinese Tech The proposal extends a broader U.S. effort to scrutinize Chinese-linked communications infrastructure. Earlier this month, Washington was also considering restrictions on Chinese optical transceivers , components that move data through fiber-optic networks and support artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Shares of Lumentum Holdings Inc. LITE and Coherent Corp. COHR rose after reports of those potential measures. In June, the FCC proposed tighter oversight of submarine cables , which carry about 99% of international internet traffic, creating more room for U.S. tech giants, including Meta Platforms Inc. META and Alphabet Inc. GOOG GOOGL , to expand networks.

The Logistics Report: Logistics Operators Push Off Holiday Hiring — WSJ Newsletter. By Liz Young Companies are going just-in-time with their hiring for the busy holiday shopping season. The WSJ Logistics Report writes that logistics companies and retailers are using technology to speed up the hiring process and flexible scheduling to bring on workers as needed. The tactics let businesses hire later in the season to avoid bringing on too many employees-or too few-in an uncertain retail economy. E-commerce fulfillment provider Paxon used to start staffing up around September. In the past few years, the company has instead brought on more temporary workers in late October or November. Companies are taking different hiring approaches this year. DHL Group and GXO Logistics each plan to hire about 25% more seasonal workers. United Parcel Service is keeping hiring roughly flat with more than 100,000 seasonal workers. The U.S. Postal Service plans to reduce seasonal hiring to about 10,000 people from 14,000 last year. Amazon said it plans to hire more than 300,000 employees for the holidays, up from 250,000 in 2025. Businesses have had to make their plans amid a murky economic outlook. The National Retail Federation forecast retail sales will grow 4.2% from last year. But some of that growth may come from higher prices rather than increased volume. Revenue from Amazon's online retail business grew 2% in the third quarter to about $68.5 billion. (WSJ) Quote of the Day "The last months have shown how critical oil inventories are, not just the total number, but the ability to access them." Ben Cahill, director of energy markets and policy at the University of Texas at Austin. Transportation Port employers are staving off the threat of a strike in Southern California-for now. The WSJ Logistics Report's Paul Berger writes that employers at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach say they are nearing a deal with union workers that would delay the threat of a strike. The Pacific Maritime Association said it is finalizing an extension to a labor contract with 250 unionized watchmen, or port security guards, that is due to expire Sunday. A spokesman said the extension would run through Wednesday, giving the two sides more time to reach a new contract deal. The employer group had warned that the guards had voted to authorize a strike that could begin as soon as the current contract expired if a deal wasn't reached. Employers feared that if the guards went on strike, other unionized longshore workers, from crane operators to container-yard workers, wouldn't cross picket lines. Number of the Day 242.4 U.S. Bank freight payment index for shipper spending in the third quarter, up 32.1% from a year ago in the largest annual increase since 2021. Procurement A seismic change in demand for memory chips is highlighting the importance of supplier relationships. The WSJ's Rolfe Winkler reports that for years, tech giant Apple was the world's biggest buyer of flash, the chips in iPhones that store photos, music and apps. The company used its position to squeeze every cent from suppliers and got flash makers to open their books so it could monitor sales, making sure no one else got a better deal. But in the past year, demand by AI hyperscalers has quintupled prices for flash, according to research firm TechInsights. Two years ago, Apple bought nearly twice the flash storage of Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and Google combined. Hyperscalers are now buying double Apple's share. That has opened a new era for flash suppliers and given the companies leverage to charge Apple higher prices-a massive change after years where Apple had the upper hand in negotiations. Amazon and Intel Tank the AI Trade. The One Factor Linking Big Tech's Underwhelming Earnings. — Barrons.com. By Adam Clark Big Tech earnings are on track to be more of a horror movie than a crowd pleaser. Technology stocks across the market are sinking as investors eye shrinking cash flows across the sector's largest companies. Amazon.com was the latest victim. The online retailer-and-cloud computing provider disclosed that its free cash flow was negative $42.4 billion for the 12 months to the end of September. That's a huge reversal from the $14.8 billion in cash it generated in the same period a year earlier. It's a familiar pattern. Google-parent Alphabet and Meta Platforms both reported outflows of cash for the third quarter. Of the biggest companies reporting, only Microsoft offered a positive cash story, generating $18.6 billion for the quarter — although that was still down from $25.7 billion in the prior year. There's no mystery about what's responsible for this particular massacre of previously healthy cash-flow balances — spending on artificial intelligence. But previously those concerns had largely been offset by the hugely profitable core businesses of the big companies investing in AI. As Barron's has noted, those are now suffering their own missteps, which means investors are putting big cash outlays under harsher scrutiny. That accounts for stock drops of the major AI spenders — Amazon was down 6.9% in premarket trading Friday, with Alphabet, Meta and Microsoft all edging down as well. But the selloff was also hurting chip stocks and cloud-computing companies, which should arguably be the beneficiaries of their spending. Neocloud company CoreWeave — which has acted as a proxy for the riskiness of the AI trade due to its debt load — was down more than 6% as was its peer Nebius Group. Investors might be questioning how much more borrowing the market can bear, after Microsoft issued $25 billion in debt on Thursday. As it turns out, AI hardware providers aren't immune to cost pressures either. Intel stock was plummeting 25% in the premarket after its own earnings report Thursday. The soaring cost of memory chips is crimping its PC market, while the company is also struggling to ramp up supply to meet AI server demand. Intel also warned that it doesn't expect positive free cash flow in 2027, characterizing it as an "investment year." Intel's warning spooked its peers. Dell Technologies was down nearly 10%, while HP was down close to 8% in the premarket. "Investors took a moment to examine whether the recent pace of tech valuations still made sense, given all of the spending on AI development that is hitting cash flows," said Paul Stanley, managing director at wealth management firm Arca. "This is not the first tech and AI correction, and it won't be the last. We are still in the very early stages of AI development, and pullbacks are par for the course."
