Intel plunges 25%, triggers global chip rout on bleak outlook. By Anhata Rooprai Intel INTC tumbled 25% in premarket trading on Friday on a bleak outlook, deepening a broader retreat in technology stocks as investors grew increasingly wary of weakening PC demand and the vast spending required to build out AI infrastructure. The forecast underscores the challenges facing CEO Lip-Bu Tan's turnaround effort, with Intel still grappling with a prolonged PC market slump even as it invests heavily in AI and manufacturing expansion. Semiconductor stocks, including Advanced Micro Devices AMD , Arm Holdings ARM , Qualcomm QCOM , Nvidia NVDA , Broadcom AVGO and Micron MU , fell between 2% and 9% in premarket trading. "The market is in a sell first, ask questions later mood right now, and Intel's warning has given investors an easy excuse to take some money off the table across chip stocks," said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst, Hargreaves Lansdown. The selloff spread to server makers, reflecting investor caution toward companies tied to the semiconductor and AI infrastructure supply chain. Shares of server makers Dell Technologies DELL , Hewlett Packard Enterprise HPE and Super Micro Computer SMCI fell between 6% and 12% in premarket trading. The STOXX Europe 600 Technology Index (.SX8P) fell 2%, with sector heavyweight ASML ASML shedding 5.4%. U.S.-listed shares of TSMC 2330 , the world's largest contract chipmaker, fell 3.9%. Intel was on track to lose more than $123 billion in market value and open at its lowest level in about six months if the premarket losses held. The US chipmaker forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $15 billion to $16 billion, below analysts' average estimate of $17.07 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Finance chief David Zinsner also said Intel does not expect positive cash flow this year. MEMORY CRUNCH BITES Higher memory prices, driven by suppliers shifting capacity toward AI-focused high-bandwidth memory chips, are raising PC costs and weighing on already weak consumer demand. PC chips accounted for roughly half of Intel's third-quarter revenue, and the company expects sales from the segment to decline more than 20% sequentially this quarter after a 5% drop in the September period. "It will be important to see if Intel can expand the highly profitable Xeon product supply to help offset this developing weakness in PC," said Brian Mulberry, chief market strategist at Zacks Investment Management. "Bottom line, weaker sales volumes, higher manufacturing costs, and an out-of-cycle product mix is a recipe for the stock to decline over the near term as future earnings are under a lot of pressure."

AMD's stock slides after Intel earnings reveal two big issues. By Emily Bary Intel is struggling to make enough AI server chips and dealing with a weak PC market. Investors will soon find out the degree to which AMD is suffering from the same problems. AMD reports earnings on Tuesday. Advanced Micro Devices shares are getting caught up in the intense market reaction to Intel's earnings. Intel (INTC) is experiencing twin pressures within its business. Sales of personal computers are weakening due to inflated memory-chip prices, and the company isn't able to make enough server chips to satisfy robust demand for central processing units. Since AMD (AMD), like Intel, makes CPUs for both PCs and data centers, the question for AMD investors concerns the degree to which Intel's issues are related to industrywide dynamics versus company-specific missteps. For now, AMD shares are off about 10% in premarket action Friday, while Intel's stock is off more than 25%. AMD is due to post its own earnings on Tuesday afternoon. The troubles in the PC market likely extend beyond Intel. Even before Intel's report, third-party estimates indicated industrywide PC shipments were down by some 20% in the third quarter relative to the same period a year earlier. That marked an escalation from the mid-single-digit decline seen in the second quarter, Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon wrote in a preview of both AMD's and Intel's earnings. Following Intel's report, Cantor Fitzgerald analyst C.J. Muse wrote that a "decline in the PC market is not a surprise," given high memory prices, but the extent of Intel's declines proved "a meaningful surprise." The company's results implied a 45% drop in unit sales relative to a year before, he said. Intel's management team noted that while elevated memory prices are crimping PC demand, another issue is that corporate information-technology teams now face more limited budgets for equipment purchases. Some of Intel's problems in server chips, however, might relate to its own poor execution. In particular, the company seems to have misjudged the respective demand outlooks for the PC and server businesses, leaving it with too much production capacity for PC chips, all while it can't meet the booming server demand. Chip companies across the board can't satisfy all the demand for artificial-intelligence chips, but the issues might be especially pronounced at Intel. Cantor Fitzgerald's Muse noted Intel's "clear loss of share to AMD in servers." -Emily Bary This content was created by MarketWatch, which is operated by Dow Jones & Co. Investors pull money from US equity funds ahead of earnings reports from AI hyperscalers. US equity funds recorded their first weekly outflows in three weeks in the week ended October 28, as investors grew cautious ahead of earnings from major AI hyperscalers amid concerns about the rising cost of their AI build-outs. Investors withdrew a net $6.65 billion from US equity funds during the week, marking the first weekly outflow since October 7, according to LSEG Lipper data. Microsoft MSFT reported a strong cash-flow beat earlier this week and forecast robust cloud growth, offering fresh evidence that its substantial AI investments were paying off. However, Alphabet GOOG and Amazon AMZN disappointed investors with their results. US large-cap funds recorded $3.8 billion worth of outflows, partly reversing inflows of $8.72 billion the prior week. Investors also shed mid-cap funds of $2.11 billion, small-cap funds of $832 million and multi-cap funds of $303 million. Sectoral funds recorded net weekly inflows of $3.52 billion — the largest in three weeks — driven largely by $4.54 billion in net purchases of technology funds. Financial and healthcare sector funds saw outflows of $713 million and $701 million, respectively. US bond funds attracted $2.04 billion, as demand recovered after a net $969 million worth of sales in the prior week. Municipal debt funds, general domestic taxable fixed-income funds and inflation-protected funds recorded net purchases of $1.74 billion, $1.31 billion and $1.08 billion, respectively. Meanwhile, short- to intermediate-term government and Treasury funds and short- to intermediate-term investment-grade funds saw outflows of $2.48 billion and $1.59 billion, respectively. Money market funds recorded net outflows of $47.66 billion, following roughly $14.97 billion in inflows the previous week.
