Alphabet Posts Worst Week Since 2011, Intel Suffers Record Crash as Warsh Sees 'Cracks': This Week on Wall Street. The artificial intelligence trade broke down for a third consecutive week, and the damage this time came straight from the balance sheets of the companies funding the buildout. Two weeks ago, investors worried about valuations. Last week, they asked who would pay the bill. This week, Alphabet Inc. GOOGL , Amazon.com Inc. AMZN and Intel Corp. INTC handed them the invoice. By Friday afternoon, the Nasdaq 100 had slid about 4% on the session to its lowest level since early August and was down roughly 2.5% for the week, its third straight weekly decline. The S&P 500 was off about 2% on the day and close to 1% on the week. • Alphabet stock is facing resistance. Why are GOOG shares declining? Alphabet’s Worst Week In 15 Years Alphabet Inc. lit the fuse on Wednesday night. Revenue came in short of expectations, free cash flow swung to a roughly $9 billion outflow, and management signaled that capital spending will climb again in 2027. Thursday’s 13% drop was the steepest single-session decline in the stock’s history and erased roughly $482 billion of market value. Shares are down about 13% for the week, the worst weekly showing since August 2011. The pain spread across the sector. The Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE: XLC ) is on track for an eighth straight daily loss, its longest losing streak since the fund launched in 2018. Amazon added to the pressure Thursday night. Earnings of $1.89 per share fell short of the $1.96 consensus, while the company said 2027 capital expenditures will be “meaningfully more” than this year’s roughly $220 billion. Intel’s Worst Day Ever Intel Corp. INTC delivered the week’s most violent move. The chipmaker guided fourth-quarter revenue to $15 billion to $16 billion, well below the $17.07 billion analysts expected, and said it does not expect positive cash flow this year as PC demand weakens. Shares collapsed about 30% on Friday, the worst session in Intel’s trading history, with no comparable decline in more than 11,700 sessions since 1980. Bank of America Global Research downgraded the stock to Neutral from Buy, saying in a Friday report that the agentic server CPU tide “is more than offset by PC/supply headwinds.” Chart: Intel Plunged 30%, Surpassing July 1974’s Drop Warsh: ‘Interest Rates Get In The Cracks’ The Federal Reserve left the federal funds rate at 3.75% to 4% on Wednesday. The decision passed 10-2, with Gov. Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissenting in favor of a quarter-point hike. Chair Kevin Warsh declined to commit to a December move. “I don’t believe in forward guidance absent exigent circumstances,” he said. Asked whether higher borrowing costs could cool the AI boom, he offered a line that aged quickly over the next 48 hours. “Interest rates get in the cracks. Interest rates affect directly or indirectly almost everything,” Warsh said. He indicated that investors have grown more selective about where they put money, noting that credit spreads on some assets have blown out while financial conditions have tightened for others. Thursday’s data gave both camps ammunition. Third-quarter GDP expanded at a 3.4% annualized pace, ahead of the 3.2% forecast, while the PCE price index accelerated to 3.6% year over year from 3.4%. Weekly jobless claims slipped to 194,000, below the 199,000 expected. CME FedWatch now prices a 74% probability of a December rate hike, down from 85% right after Wednesday’s meeting. Treasuries Catch A Bid Bonds became the safe harbor. The 10-year Treasury yield fell to about 4.92%, after touching 4.89% earlier in the day, the lowest since early September. The 2-year yield dropped to 4.57% and the 30-year held near 5.31%. Health Care’s Best Month Ever Against the Market As money fled technology, defensive sectors absorbed it. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE: XLV) is on track for its best month ever relative to the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:SPY), outperforming by 11% in October, according to data going back to 1998. The previous record was March 2020, at 9.9%. The iShares Biotechnology ETF IBB climbed to an all-time high this week. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. REGN surged 11% on Friday, its best day since October 2025. Best and Worst S&P 500 Stocks This Week The top performers in the S&P 500 this week were Carvana Co. CVNA , up nearly 20%; Pentair plc PNR , up 19.6%, and Vertiv Holdings Co. VRT , up 18%. At the bottom, Reddit Inc. RDDT lost about 38% after CEO Steve Huffman warned daily active visitors could fall by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter. ServiceNow Inc. NOW dropped nearly 35% after its quarterly report, and Intel fell close to 27%. Reddit’s 30% plunge on Friday was also the worst day in its history and stretched its losing run to eight sessions, a 41.9% slide. Records and Streaks Several stocks are writing history. Albemarle Corp. ALB is on track for a 10th straight weekly loss, down 36.9% over the stretch, the longest losing streak in data going back to 1994. The previous record was nine weeks in March 2000. Interactive Brokers Group Inc. IBKR is heading for a ninth straight weekly drop, a 20.5% decline that doubles as a new record, while SanDisk Corp. SNDK has fallen six weeks in a row, losing 36.6%. Boeing Co. BA is down eight weeks in a row, its longest losing stretch since October 2023, and Robinhood Markets Inc. HOOD is on a six-week slide of 30.7%. On the upside, Marathon Petroleum Corp. MPC is set for a 10th straight monthly gain, up 171%, matching its record from March 2013. HCA Healthcare Inc. HCA has risen five months in a row, tying its March 2024 record, and Marriott International Inc. MAR is up seven straight weeks. Among Friday’s other movers, FedEx Freight Holding Co. (NASDAQ:FDXF) jumped 16%, its best day since May, and Global Payments Inc. GPN rose 10%. Illumina Inc. ILMN dropped 19%, its worst session since October 2016. Detroit Rides The Rotation General Motors Co. GM gained about 15% this week, its best weekly performance since October 2025. The stock rallied 5.5% on Tuesday after GM announced it will move its listing to Nasdaq on Nov. 17 and invest in its Lansing Delta Township plant to build hybrid vehicles. Ford Motor Co. F added about 5% after third-quarter results topped expectations. Revenue reached $49.53 billion against a $46.24 billion estimate, and adjusted EPS of 49 cents beat the 41-cent consensus. Ford also lifted the bottom of its full-year adjusted EBIT guidance to $10.5 billion. “Ford delivered a strong quarter as we’re entering a defining phase of the company’s transformation,” CEO Jim Farley said. What’s Next: Apple, Midterms and Jobs Next week brings no Fed meeting, but it does test whether the AI sell-off can find a floor. Apple Inc. AAPL and Palantir Technologies Inc. PLTR report Monday after the close. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD and Super Micro Computer Inc. SMCI follow on Tuesday, the same day Americans vote in the midterm elections. Qualcomm Inc. QCOM and Arm Holdings plc ARM report Wednesday. The week closes with the October jobs report on Friday, Nov. 6, the last payrolls print before the Fed’s December decision. After September’s 29,000 gain, traders will be watching for any sign the labor market is softening enough to take a December hike off the table.

These 3 ETFs Doubled Investors' Money in October as AI Stocks Crashed. October’s AI-driven market sell-off created an unlikely set of ETF winners. As investors pulled back from high-flying AI infrastructure and quantum computing stocks, leveraged inverse ETFs betting against these companies delivered triple-digit returns. The Tradr 2X Short CBRS Daily ETF CBRZ posted a monthly gain of 126%. Tradr 2X Short IREN Daily ETF IREZ , gained 135%, and the T-REX 2X Inverse CRWV Daily Target ETF CORD , which advanced 96%. The common thread? These funds offered leveraged inverse exposure to individual stocks, allowing traders to profit from sharp declines in some of the market’s hottest technology themes. AI Infrastructure and Quantum Computing Face a Reality Check The performance of these ETFs reflects October’s broader reassessment of the AI trade. Investors have increasingly questioned whether the enormous capital expenditure commitments by technology companies will translate into sufficient returns. Rising Treasury yields, which touched approximately 5.37% early in October, added pressure to valuations, particularly among high-growth technology companies. The concerns extended beyond established technology giants to companies associated with AI infrastructure and data-center expansion. CBRZ, IREZ and CORD benefited from declines in Cerebras Systems Inc CBRS , as well as IREN Ltd. IREN and CoreWeave Inc CRWV , respectively, two companies closely associated with the AI infrastructure investment cycle. The sharp gains in these inverse ETFs suggest that traders were increasingly willing to position themselves against some of the market’s most aggressively valued technology themes. A Word Of Caution for Investors These spectacular returns come with substantial risks. All three ETFs employ leveraged inverse strategies designed to deliver approximately twice the inverse of their respective underlying stocks’ daily performance. Their daily-reset structure means returns over multiple sessions can differ significantly from twice the inverse of the underlying stock’s cumulative performance. Volatility and compounding can also erode returns when prices fluctuate sharply. Consequently, these funds are primarily designed for short-term tactical trading rather than long-term portfolio exposure. October’s biggest ETF winners offer a clear snapshot of Wall Street’s changing preferences. As investors reassess AI valuations and the sustainability of infrastructure spending, betting against the market’s most speculative corners has proved extraordinarily profitable. However, the same leverage that magnified October’s gains can just as quickly amplify losses if the underlying stocks rebound.

Leaders from Wolters Kluwer, Microsoft, Salesforce, and McKinsey challenge accounting firms to make one AI move in the next 90 days. Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting brought together leaders from Microsoft, Salesforce, McKinsey, and Sandra Wiley Strategies at CCH Connections 2026 with a clear message for accounting firms: as AI agents move from recommending actions to taking them, the time to decide how work gets done, how trust is earned, and how people build expertise is now. The main-stage panel, The New Blueprint: Building the Future-Ready Firm , moderated by Matt Linderman , Partner at McKinsey, drew on what each leader has learned from adopting and scaling AI. On Wednesday, panelists urged firms not to wait for a perfect firmwide AI strategy. Start with one workflow, secure the data behind it, and build agentic workflows with the governance and controls to deliver the intended outcomes. The session closed with a challenge for every firm leader: set priorities for the next 12 months and choose one practical move to make in the next 90 days. “The future-ready firm will not be defined by technology alone. It will be defined by how leaders combine technology with trusted expertise, sound judgment, strong relationships, and a clear understanding of the outcomes their clients need,” said Jason Marx , CEO, Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting. “Bringing technology, business transformation, and firm leadership perspectives together helps professionals make informed decisions about where to act now and how to prepare for what comes next.” Key themes from the discussion: AI is a business transformation opportunity, not simply a productivity tool. Panelists challenged firms to define the client outcomes and operating models they will need in the years ahead, then determine where AI can best enable them, instead of using the technology to simply automate today’s processes. Successful transformation requires changes in how firms develop people and organize work. As AI takes on more foundational tasks, firms need to consider how newer professionals will build expertise and judgment, and how training, supervision, team structures, and incentives should evolve. Trust and governance will determine how far and how quickly AI can advance. As AI takes on more autonomous work, organizations need clear standards for evidence, accountability, and human oversight, including an understanding of when an AI agent should stop and defer to professional judgment. “Building an agent isn’t the challenge. The challenge is integrating agents into business workflows with the right context, governance, and human judgment,” said Lara Rubbelke , CTO and Vice President, Frontier Industry Advisory, Microsoft. Firms should start small, measure results, and learn quickly. Value starts with deciding what outcome to drive, such as customer experience, employee productivity, or faster ROI. Anu Saha , SVP and COO, Agentforce, Salesforce urged firms to begin with one workflow and secure the data within it, noting that data transformation doesn’t have to start with all of a firm’s data at one time. Rather than waiting for every aspect of AI transformation to be resolved, panelists encouraged leaders to establish a small team, define how success will be measured, and use those lessons to guide where and how to scale. New ways of working require a plan, and the investment to back it. Sandra Wiley , CEO, Sandra Wiley Strategies, emphasized that AI adoption must be built into a firm’s strategic planning and budget, with every investment tied back to the firm’s strategy rather than the latest tool. “This panel made clear that the opportunity with AI isn’t simply to make today’s processes faster. It’s to rethink how work gets done,” said Dennis Cahill, CTO, Wolters Kluwer. “As firms move from experimentation to broader adoption, the focus shifts to building the governance, processes, and trust needed to scale AI responsibly while keeping professional expertise and judgment at the center.” The conversation was informed by perspectives from participating leaders, questions and themes submitted by CCH Connections attendees, and insights from Wolters Kluwer’s Future Ready Accountant research. Participants Matt Linderman , Partner, McKinsey | Moderator Dennis Cahill , CTO, Wolters Kluwer Lara Rubbelke , CTO and Vice President, Frontier Industry Advisory, Microsoft Anu Saha , SVP and COO, Agentforce, Salesforce Sandra Wiley, CEO, Sandra Wiley Strategies The conversation continues at CCH Connections 2027, October 25–28 in Las Vegas, with fresh opportunities to connect with peers, explore what’s next, and help shape the future of your firm. U.S. Stocks Slide as Amazon, Intel Earnings Spark More AI Selling. By Rob Curran U.S. stocks fell as the artificial-intelligence selloff began to feed on itself following more disappointing earnings reports from Amazon and Intel, leaving investors to wonder if the tech correction could become a speculative bust. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 572.25 points, or 1.09%, to 51770.31. The broad S&P 500 dropped 140.32 points, or 1.82%, to 7580.07 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite dove 747.73 points, or 2.86%, to 25437.00. To be sure, stocks are still comfortably in the green for the year. There is a sense of the speculative spell of AI breaking, however. The Nasdaq has come to the brink of correction territory after companies such as Google owner Alphabet and Amazon reported revenue growth at rates far above historical averages and only slightly shy of Wall Street expectations. "Reactions to bad earnings are awful, while reactions to good earnings are barely positive…which indicates poor liquidity and a still relatively complacent market, with high expectations versus reality," said Lorenzo Di Mattia, chief investment officer and founder at hedge-fund firm Sibilla Capital. Treasury yields fell as a flight to the safety of the bond market offset inflation concerns triggered by oil's resurgence above $100 a barrel in New York. Write to Rob Curran at rob.curran@wsj.com

The Week the Cracks in the AI Trade Grew Deeper — WSJ. By David Uberti and Hannah Erin Lang Slowing growth. Dwindling cash piles. Cannibalized business lines. Pressure points are multiplying across the artificial-intelligence boom that has propelled markets and the economy. The cracks in the AI trade multiplied through the week, culminating in a sharp tech selloff Friday that sent the Nasdaq composite to its worst day since June and its worst month in more than a year. The vulnerabilities in Wall Street's favorite trade have been building for months, periodically appearing around smaller companies drowning in debt. Each time, the largest firms behind America's AI build-out have reassured Wall Street by printing profits, suggesting the show will go on even in a world of higher interest rates. This week was different. After tech stocks had treaded water for weeks, AI giant Anthropic momentarily rejuvenated investors with a filing that showed soaring revenue ahead of its planned initial public offering. But then publicly traded tech firms reported earnings — and markets got a reality check. First came a dissatisfying quarterly report from Alphabet, which showed that growth in Google's search-advertising business slowed — in part because of the impact of "AI mode" queries. Traders punished the stock with a 13% decline Thursday that marked its worst day on record, hammering major Alphabet shareholders such as Berkshire Hathaway. Then the bad tech vibes got worse. Late Thursday, Amazon reported plunging free cash flow and revenue that missed analyst estimates. American chipmaking giant Intel forecast a prolonged slowdown in personal-computer sales, pressured by memory chip prices sent skyrocketing by the AI boom. Intel shares on Friday crashed about 30%, the worst session on record for a company that has traded on the U.S. stock market for decades. The plunge vaporized more than $15 billion in combined paper holdings by two of the company's largest shareholders: the U.S. government and Nvidia.
