Meta Settles With Teen In Social Media Addiction Lawsuit. WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Meta Platforms Inc. (META) has reached a settlement with a teen who accused the company of designing Instagram and Facebook to encourage addictive use that contributed to mental health problems and disordered eating. The plaintiff, identified as K.D.B., settled with Meta after jury selection began in Los Angeles. The agreement follows Meta's settlement with another teen plaintiff, S.J., days earlier. The terms of both settlements are confidential. TikTok and YouTube had previously resolved claims brought by the two teens, leaving Snapchat parent Snap as the sole defendant in the trial. Opening arguments are scheduled for November 4. The plaintiffs alleged that features designed to increase engagement encouraged compulsive social media use and contributed to serious mental and physical health problems. Meta and other technology companies have denied deliberately designing their platforms to addict young users. The case is among thousands of lawsuits accusing social media companies of contributing to mental health problems among children and teenagers. Copyright(c) 2026 RTTNews.com. Microsoft, BMW introduce voluntary exit offers: How paying employees to quit could help firms retain committed workers. New Delhi, Oct. 31 -- As major companies such as Microsoft and BMW introduce voluntary exit programmes, new research suggests that offering employees financial incentives to leave could help businesses reshape their workforces while retaining employees who are more committed to their organisations. The approach, commonly known as a pay-to-quit or voluntary exit scheme, allows eligible employees to accept financial compensation in exchange for leaving their jobs. Research indicates that such programmes could help employers identify workers who are more inclined to move on while encouraging those who choose to stay to demonstrate greater commitment and work effort. A study published in the Journal of Management Accounting Research examined how employees' attachment to their organisations influences their decisions to accept financial incentives to quit. The research was conducted by Leslie Berger and Lan Guo of Wilfrid Laurier University, Kelsey Matthews of the University of Waterloo, and Bradley Ruffle of McMaster University in Canada. The researchers examined how employees' identification with an organisation affected their willingness to accept financial incentives to resign. The findings indicated that employees with weaker organisational attachment were more likely to accept the offers, while those with a strong sense of belonging generally preferred to remain, irrespective of the financial incentive. The payments appeared to have the greatest influence on employees whose attachment to their organisations fell between these two groups. Interestingly, the researchers also found that employees who rejected the exit offers subsequently demonstrated greater work effort than before. This suggests that voluntary exit programmes could influence not only workforce composition but also the behaviour of employees who decide to stay. A separate study published in the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics in 2026 examined the responses of 1,000 participants in an online experiment. Participants who rejected a small financial payment to quit completed 33% more tasks than those in a control group. However, researchers could not conclusively establish whether the higher productivity resulted from rejecting the payment or reflected participants' existing motivation. The findings therefore suggest a possible relationship rather than proof of a direct causal link. Microsoft announced a voluntary exit programme on October 26 for eligible employees in participating teams across India, the US, the UK and Canada. In a company blog post, Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said the initiative would provide financial assistance and career-planning resources to employees considering opportunities outside the company. The programme covers employees at level 70 and below in participating teams. Eligibility will depend on business priorities, customer commitments and workforce requirements. According to a PTI report, approximately 60,000 employees globally were eligible, including workers in India. Microsoft has around 23,000 employees in the country. Eligible employees in India reportedly have until December 1 to make their decision. The package is understood to include one month's base salary for every completed year of service, health insurance and career-transition support. Microsoft has described the initiative as a time-limited programme to help participating business units adapt their workforce to changing requirements. German automaker BMW has also introduced a voluntary severance programme as part of its broader cost-reduction strategy. However, the initiative encountered an IT disruption after a large number of employees attempted to access their personalised offers through the company's internal human resources portal. According to German publications Handelsblatt and Automobilwoche, approximately 40,000 eligible employees attempted to view their individual offers. A BMW spokesperson told Automobilwoche that the portal experienced high usage after employees received notifications about the programme. BMW aims to eliminate around 8,000 positions in Germany by the end of 2027, excluding employees directly involved in production. The company also plans to reduce departments and associated management positions by 20% by mid-2027. Voluntary exit programmes can help businesses reduce workforce costs and restructure operations without resorting to compulsory layoffs. However, their financial benefits depend on several factors, including severance expenses, replacement costs and the skills of departing employees. Companies also face the risk of losing experienced workers whose contribution is difficult to replace. The research suggests that financial incentives may help distinguish between employees who are already considering leaving and those who remain committed to their organisations. However, the effectiveness of these programmes will depend on how they are designed and implemented. For Microsoft and BMW, the eventual impact will depend on employee participation, the number of departures and the ability of the companies to maintain productivity with a reshaped workforce.

S&P Global revises Meta's outlook to 'negative' on AI spending, cash flow concerns. S&P Global Ratings on Friday revised its outlook on Meta Platforms META to "negative" from "stable", citing significant uncertainty around its capital spending and free operating cash flow. Meta has been pouring money into advanced chips and data centers to compete more aggressively with AI market leaders, eroding its historically strong free cash flow. The company's ability to monetize its AI investments is more limited than that of its peers, S&P said, adding it was unclear when its revenue streams would generate material contributions exceeding their rising costs over the next few years. Meta last week forecast annual capital expenditure between $135 billion and $145 billion after reporting a free cash flow deficit of $2.12 billion in the third quarter, compared with positive free cash flow a year earlier. "Given the lack of clarity around the company's future capex and its very ambitious multi-year AI investment plans, we are less certain that it will curtail its spending as previously anticipated," S&P said. The ratings agency said it believes Meta's leverage could rise to above 1.0x as early as 2027, which is S&P Global's threshold for the "AA-" issuer credit rating. S&P now forecasts Meta will generate free operating cash flow deficits of $39 billion in 2026 and $71 billion in 2027, adding that elevated capital spending could result in its FOCF remaining negative beyond 2028. The social media company recently said it plans to sell $97.5 billion in stock in an effort to tap public markets as it expands AI infrastructure. Meta's shares were little changed in extended trading on Friday. They fell more than 4% this week, marking their fifth straight weekly loss.

Stocks fall on AI cash burn worries while bonds rally with oil. By Sinéad Carew and Iain Withers A sharp selloff in Wall Street's tech shares pushed MSCI's global index down 1.5% on Friday, sending investors to the safety of US bonds on fears that hefty cash-burning AI investments may not deliver sufficient returns. Shares in chipmaker Intel < INTC.O> plunged 28.6% and Amazon AMZN shares lost 1.4% after their results each showed that they burned through cash while investing heavily in AI-related development. Intel also said PC demand had slowed, and that it could persist through next year. Shares in Google parent Alphabet GOOG lost another 1.4%, having slid 12.6% on Thursday, after it reported that massive AI spending turned the company's cash flow negative. "We've had such a huge move up in the whole complex," said Sahak Manuelian, managing director for global equities sales and trading at Wedbush Securities, referring to AI-related stocks. "When you've had the parabolic-like moves, it makes for a very nasty downdraft. I think that's what we're seeing. And then you have people that are starting to pull money out and going to other areas." Earlier, Gene Goldman, chief investment officer at Cetera, described Friday's stock trading as a "horror show" with AI spending being the villain as cash burn and elevated capex prompted questions about whether the AI returns will "justify the outlays." Goldman also said pressure from rising oil prices due to more attacks in the Middle East and concerns about a hack at Binance, the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchange, added to the gloom. Bitcoin BTCUSD and other cryptocurrencies fell. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJI fell 572.25 points, or 1.09%, to 51,770.31, the S&P 500 CBOE:SPX fell 140.32 points, or 1.82%, to 7,580.07 and the Nasdaq Composite IXIC fell 747.73 points, or 2.86%, to 25,437.00. MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe EURONEXT:IACWI fell 17.15 points, or 1.51%, to 1,115.47. Earlier, the pan-European STOXX 600 SXXP index finished down 0.36%. On Wall Street, Intel's selloff spread across the chip sector. The PHLX semiconductor index SOX finished down more than 7% after touching its lowest level since May, marking its biggest daily drop since late June. The S&P 500 technology S5INFT index lost 4.2% in its weakest day since early June. Investors looking for safer bets pushed up consumer staples S5CONS and utilities S5UTIL . But the top performer on the day was energy SPN , which was bolstered by oil's rally and results from Exxon Mobil XOM and Chevron CVX . The oil majors posted strong profits due to big refining margins driven by supply disruptions from Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries and the Iran war. In currencies, the yen was headed for its third consecutive daily gain against the dollar on Friday after the Bank of Japan held rates steady but revised up its inflation forecast, while a fresh wave of selling in AI shares triggered demand for non-dollar safe havens. The dollar index DXY , which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, rose 0.04% to 101.92, with the euro EURUSD down 0.13% at $1.1163. Against the Japanese yen USDJPY , the dollar weakened 0.1% to 157.54. In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin BTCUSD fell 2.49% to $76,877.30. Ethereum ETHUSD declined 1.01% to $2,236.76. US Treasuries rose and the benchmark 10-year yield was eyeing its biggest monthly drop in nearly three years as the selloff in technology-related stocks pushed investors into the safe-haven asset. The yield on benchmark US 10-year notes US10Y fell 5.8 basis points to 4.931% while the 30-year bond (US30YT=RR) yield fell 1.97 basis points to 5.3093%. The 2-year note (US2YT=RR) yield, which typically moves in step with interest rate expectations for the Federal Reserve, fell 6.64 basis points to 4.59%. Oil prices settled at six-month highs as traders braced for a potential escalation in the Iran war after the US midterm elections on Tuesday. The war has lingered for eight months without a resolution. On Friday, a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was attacked, highlighting the ongoing supply risks. US crude CL1! settled up 2.08%, or $2.12, to $104.12 a barrel. Brent BRN1! finished at $117.63 per barrel, up 2.4%, or $2.76 a barrel, on the day. Precious metals fell. Gold dropped to a one-year low on Friday and silver slid below $50 an ounce for the first time since November 2025, as higher energy prices and persistent inflation concerns strengthened expectations that US interest rates will stay high. Spot gold GOLD fell 3.63% to $3,874.58 an ounce and spot silver XAGUSD1! fell 6.36% to $49.06 an ounce.

Petrobras refineries run at 98% capacity in October, director says. By Rodrigo Viga Gaier Brazilian state-run oil firm Petrobras' PETR3 refineries operated at a 98% utilization rate in October, close to the 99% recorded in the third quarter, as it seeks to reduce the need for imports, a director of the company said. The refineries continue to operate near their maximum capacity, while complying with safety standards, the director of industrial processes and products at Petrobras, William Franca, told Reuters in an interview late Thursday. Petrobras only carried out "a few minor" necessary shutdowns across the refining system in the period, such as at RNEST refinery, he said Since the beggining of the war in the Middle East, Petrobras has ramped up oil output to capitalize on higher Brent prices, and hiked refinery operations to cut fuel imports Petrobras' refinery utilization rate is expected to remain high and close to the operational limit in November and December, according to Franca Petrobras will adjust its refining mix in December, he said, hiking gasoline production to meet Brazil's summer demand, and cutting diesel output after the summer planting season In the first half of 2027, the refinery operation rate is seen falling to around 96% due to scheduled maintenance and expansion works at Replan refinery in March and April, he added
