Could Orbital Data Centers Ruin the Night Sky? — WSJ. By Rebecca Cadenhead On the top of a mountain in the Chilean desert, an $800 million U.S.-taxpayer-funded telescope just opened its eye. The brand-new Vera C. Rubin Observatory is supposed to complete a groundbreaking "survey" of the universe, the most comprehensive catalog of its galaxies, asteroids, supernovas and black holes ever completed. But Rubin's scientists have encountered a problem. Fast-moving, light-reflecting satellites are leaving white streaks across their photographs. The proliferation of satellites is an "existential threat" to the observatory's work, said J. Anthony Tyson, its chief scientist, who is best known for mapping dark matter. Tyson and other scientists warn that these orbiting machines will make it increasingly difficult to do astronomical research from Earth — and, eventually, will render the night sky unrecognizable. Currently, there are more than 17,000 active satellites in orbit, compared with around 1,000 a decade ago, said Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist who has cataloged every orbital rocket launch since 1957. A decade from now, he estimates, there will probably be over 100,000. Satellites reflect sunlight back to Earth. As the number of satellites grows, so too will light pollution from space. "You'd see twice as many stars in the sky," said Hanno Rein, an associate professor at the University of Toronto who has modeled light pollution from planned satellite constellations. "But only half of them would be real." The other half would actually be satellites transiting the sky. Currently, satellites are mainly used for telecommunications. The majority are owned by Starlink, which provides internet connectivity around the world. In the future, as it becomes cheaper to launch material into space, more companies and governments will launch their own satellites. Blue Origin, Google, Cowboy Space and others have all said they plan to build orbital data centers, which would likely consist of hundreds of thousands of satellites. SpaceX says its "Starmind" orbital data center would have over a million satellites. Satellites now aren't very large. Starlink's satellites are about four square meters in size, roughly equivalent to a king bed. But satellites involved in orbital data centers would be much larger. SpaceX said in public filings that the satellites involved in its orbital data center would be up to 1,500 square meters. Cowboy Space said its satellites would be 4,800 square meters, close to the size of a football field. SpaceX has voluntarily mitigated the brightness of its Starlink satellites, Tyson said. He has been discussing brightness mitigation with SpaceX staffers for almost a decade. Another Rubin scientist said it has had "positive dialogues" with a half-dozen other satellite companies. "They've been very helpful, or they're trying to be," he said. But Starlink satellites are already brighter than International Astronomical Union recommendations and visible to the unaided eye, he said. Tyson hasn't talked to any Chinese satellite manufacturers. Chinese satellites are sometimes brighter than American ones, scientists said. SpaceX didn't respond to requests for comment. Google and Blue Origin declined to comment. Cowboy Space couldn't be reached for comment. The FCC approves satellite projects, though it doesn't have any rules about how bright satellites can be. "With the exception of a U.S. law preventing space-based advertising, there are no laws regulating the visual appearance of the night sky" anywhere in the world, stated a 2022 Dark and Quiet Skies Working Group report that reviewed satellite regulations across the globe. Companies plan to make their orbital data centers "sun-synchronous," which means they would almost always be illuminated by the sun, said Samantha Lawler, an associate professor at the University of Regina who recently co-wrote a paper about light pollution from orbital data centers. These solar-powered satellites would reflect even more sunlight back onto earth than other satellites do. Lawler estimates they would be as radiant as Venus, already one of the brightest points in the sky. Collectively, hundreds of thousands of these satellites would probably "completely drown out" the Milky Way and dimmer stars at certain times of night, Lawler said. Shane Ross, an engineering professor at Virginia Tech, recently created a model of what SpaceX's orbital data center would look like from Earth. His projection shows a belt of thousands of bright points, stretching from horizon to horizon, moving slowly across the night sky. "It's awesome, but it's kind of unsettling," he said. When he shared the projection, reactions varied. "Some people were really excited about this," he said. "Others said we were ruining some common heritage of humankind." Tyson and his fellow astronomers at the Rubin Observatory just started their 10-year survey of space. Now, he wonders if they'll be forced to end the experiment early. Not only do satellites leave streaks across the telescope's photographs, but Tyson also projects that megaconstellations of satellites would scatter so much light that it would brighten the entire sky. Eventually, "the sky would be too bright to do anything," Tyson said. Write to Rebecca Cadenhead at rebecca.cadenhead@wsj.com

South Korea’s Lee vows to make bold AI investment in record budget push. By Jihoon Lee and Kyu-seok Shim South Korean President Lee Jae Myung vowed on Monday to make bold investments in artificial intelligence to boost the country's economic growth potential, in an address to parliament seeking approval for next year's budget. "We will invest 21.3 trillion won ($15.97 billion), nearly twice this year’s amount, in AI and the three megaprojects of semiconductors, physical AI and AI data centres," Lee said. His administration proposed in September increasing government spending by a record 12.8% next year to 820.9 trillion won ($615.62 billion) aiming to strengthen South Korea’s technological edge as global competition over AI intensifies. South Korea’s economy has been heavily boosted by demand for advanced chips used in AI, lifting exports and the earnings of memory chip makers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Asia's fourth-largest economy grew faster than expected in the third quarter on chip exports and investment. From January to October, exports totalled $930 billion, on track to exceed $1 trillion this year and make South Korea the fourth country in the world to reach the milestone after the United States, China and Germany. Lee said annual exports of $1 trillion were now within reach, but warned that the benefits were not being shared evenly. "We must make a great transition from ‘growth for the few,’ in which opportunities and gains are concentrated among certain regions, classes and a small number of companies, to ‘growth for all,’” he said. The budget includes a 162.3 trillion won Future Response Fund, financed largely by additional tax revenue from the semiconductor boom, to support growth industries, young people, regional development and education while providing a buffer against future revenue shortfalls. Lee is simultaneously pursuing nationwide megaprojects centred on chips, physical AI and data centres, including an 800 trillion won private sector chip buildout led by Samsung and SK Hynix in the country's southwest. @FirstSquawk: Brent Oil Slides More Than $3 to $110.37/Barrel, Approaching Its Lowest Level in Over a Week.

TradingViewAAPL

Shares steady as Apple earnings near, oil eases. By Wayne Cole Share markets steadied in Asia on Monday as investors hoped for Apple earnings later in the day to provide some relief from AI cash-burn worries, while oil prices eased after talks continued between Iranian and Qatari mediators. Apple AAPL.O has been an oasis of relative calm given it does not spend billions on data centres, and its shares have climbed for four months straight to help it unseat Nvidia NVDA as the world's most valuable listed company. Analysts are looking for quarterly earnings per share (EPS) of $2 on revenue of $113 billion, up from $1.85 the same time last year. The company might also offer some guidance on how early sales of the iPhone 18 are performing with pre-orders having started in mid-October. The optimism helped S&P 500 futures ES1! edge up 0.4%, while Nasdaq futures NQ1! bounced 0.8%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq lost almost 7% in October for its worst month since the 'Liberation Day' tariff rout of April 2025. Some upbeat news is sorely needed after concerns about negative cash flow and the sheer scale of AI capex saw the cost of insuring against corporate defaults blow out last week. Intel's INTC near 29% tumble on Friday has also raised the stakes for other chip groups, including AMD AMD . An added wrinkle is the midterm elections in the United States, where a win by Democrats in either or both houses could result in more political hurdles for data centres. Analysts at Goldman Sachs expect capex by hyperscalers to almost double to $800 billion this year, and rise further to $1.2 trillion in 2027. At the same time, they see S&P 500 EPS growth of nearly 30% in 2026 slowing to 18% next year. "Earnings results have underscored the fundamental challenge facing equity investors — earnings growth is strong, but it is no longer accelerating," wrote Ben Snider, Goldman's chief US equity strategist, in a note. "Similarly, Q3 results support our view that AI investment spending will continue to grow but that the growth rate of AI capex is peaking." Adding to the air of unease were withdrawals from Binance as the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchange went back online on Sunday after hackers stole billions from the platform last week. Japan's Nikkei NI225 was down 0.1%, but off early lows, while South Korea KOSPI added 0.8%, having shed 16% last month. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) eased 0.2%. In Europe, EUROSTOXX 50 futures FESX1! and DAX futures DAX1! both firmed 0.1%, while FTSE futures were flat. MORE RATE HIKES COMING The retreat in equities last month provided a reprieve to safe-haven bonds, with investors wondering if a sustained selloff in the stock market could deter the Federal Reserve from hiking interest rates in December. (0#USDIRPR) Futures still imply a 72% chance of a quarter-point rate rise, but now only have 55 basis points of total tightening priced in compared to more than 70 basis points a month ago. Yields on 10-year Treasuries US10Y nudged up to 4.941%, but remained well off their October peak of 5.3645%, while 2-year yields (US2YT=RR) stood at 4.612%. Among central banks meeting this week, markets are wagering on hikes from the Reserve Bank of Australia, Bank of England and Riksbank, while the Norges Bank is seen on hold. Economic data due this week includes the influential US ISM survey of manufacturing for October later on Monday, while the all-important payrolls report is on Friday. Median forecasts are for a 65,000 rise in jobs, after September's disappointing 29,000 gain, with the unemployment rate holding at 4.2%. In currency markets, the majors were pretty much sidelined while all the action was concentrated in stocks. The euro was a shade firmer at $1.1169 EURUSD , while the dollar was barely changed at 157.75 yen USDJPY . For commodities, oil prices slipped as talks continued aimed at pushing for a deal to end the US-Israeli war on Iran, though tankers were still being attacked in the Gulf. Brent futures BRN1! dipped 2.0% to $111.15 a barrel, though that follows a 13.6% jump in October, while US crude futures CL1! eased 2.3% to $101.73 a barrel. Non-interest-bearing gold bounced 0.9% to $3,911 an ounce GOLD , having fallen 6.8% last month amid talk some investors were having to sell to cover margin calls on equities.
