California GOP Candidate Steve Hilton Slams Mark Zuckerberg for $1 Million Donation to Democrat Xavier Becerra: ‘Protection Money’. Republican California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton criticized Meta Platforms Inc. META CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the company’s $1 million donation to Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra . Hilton said that he knows that Zuckerberg and Meta executives believe Becerra would be “a disaster” for the state’s businesses and economy, but donated the money anyway. The Republican characterized the payment as an effort to secure favorable treatment, alleging corporations are paying for “protection money” under California’s ruling political establishment. Hilton criticized Zuckerberg for allegedly seeking “Meta carve-outs” from a potential one-party government. “The sad thing is that your business may be one of the few that can continue to operate here, and you may be one of the few that can afford to live here!,” he wrote, addressing the Meta CEO. Hilton warned that continued Democratic rule could hurt businesses and make California unaffordable for most people. “The business exodus of recent years could turn into a stampede,” he wrote. Meta did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comments. Steve Hilton @SteveHiltonx I know for a fact that Mark Zuckerberg and senior executives at Meta think Becerra would be a disaster for California's business climate and economy. But they just gave Becerra $1 million anyway. This is the level of corruption in California after 16 years of one party rule.… Oct 29, 2026 Meta-Backed PAC Donates $1 Million to Becerra The allegation followed a New York Post report that a Meta-backed super political action committee (PAC) had made a last-minute $1 million contribution to Becerra’s California gubernatorial campaign. The report described the money as coming from a super PAC backed by Zuckerberg, placing the contribution in the final stretch of the campaign. Mobilizing Economic Transformation Across (META) California donated nearly $1 million to Xavier Becerra’s campaign in five installments between Oct. 20 and 27, bringing its total contributions to more than $2.2 million, the report stated, citing campaign finance records. Xavier Becerra, former HHS Secretary under the Biden administration, is running against Republican Steve Hilton in the race to succeed California Governor Gavin Newsom . California’s Regulatory Impact on Big Tech California’s gubernatorial race matters to the tech industry because the state can shape regulations on AI, social media, and other sectors where major companies like Meta operate. Last week, Meta agreed to grant Zuckerberg non-voting shares that he could sell to cover a potential multibillion-dollar California billionaire wealth tax, in exchange for an eight-year commitment to remain in the state or wherever Meta is headquartered. The arrangement would allow Zuckerberg to retain voting control while potentially selling shares to meet the tax bill if voters approve Proposition 40. Meta’s board committee said keeping Zuckerberg in leadership is critical amid intensifying AI competition. Price Action: Year-to-date, Meta’s stock has declined about 7%, as per Benzinga Pro . The stock fell about 1.6% on Friday.

Flash Heard: The AI Boom Is Both Helping and Harming Intel — WSJ. By Asa Fitch Intel's future is all about AI. Today's plunge in its shares is a reminder of how much its past still matters. Intel became a financial juggernaut by making and selling chips at the heart of personal computers and, later, servers that underpinned the cloud-computing revolution. While it struggled at the outset of the AI boom, shifts in computing demand in recent quarters have played into its hands. Now, though, that same boom is becoming a drag on its traditional business. Intel's results showed new strengths, with $7.3 billion of revenue in its data center and AI division, higher than analysts forecast. Intel's central processing units are a big factor in inference computing for AI agents, which have been taking off. But the company's outlook for the current quarter was dismal, about $1.6 billion below projections, because its old PC-chip business is languishing. Its shares dropped more than a quarter this morning. Despite all the growth in AI, that PC-related business still supplies roughly half of Intel's revenue-$8.1 billion of it in the third quarter. And the PC market isn't looking great. PC shipments fell about 20% year-over-year in the third quarter, according to International Data Corp. The reason: Computer-memory prices have skyrocketed because of unprecedented memory demand for AI computing. As a result, PC manufacturers are focusing on higher-priced computers, reducing sales volumes. And sales volumes are what matters most to Intel. The challenges, Chief Executive Lip-Bu Tan said on an analyst call yesterday, would persist "until memory availability and prices begin to normalize." That may take a while. Intel Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner said the company expected PC unit sales to decline more than 20% in the second half of this year, followed by a 10% decline next year. Semiconductor Stocks Fall as Intel Earnings Trigger Broad Tech Selloff. By Connor Hart Semiconductor shares broadly fell following disappointing results and a downbeat outlook from Intel, along with an earnings miss from Amazon, which fueled fresh concerns around the artificial intelligence trade. The selloff rippled across the sector, hitting equipment manufacturers, foundries and analog suppliers. Broadcom shares opened Friday's regular session about 4% lower, while Advanced Micro Devices plunged nearly 10%. Shares of Micron Technology slipped 5.5%. The rout follows Intel's earnings on Thursday, when the company gave soft fourth-quarter guidance and forecast a prolonged slowdown in personal-computer sales, mostly because of high memory-chip prices. Intel's stock lost more than a quarter of its value Friday, erasing about $120 billion from the company's market capitalization. Wafer fab equipment makers were down, with Applied Materials down nearly 5% and Lam Research slipping 5.5%. The sector is susceptible to chipmakers' concerns over spending and memory and logic spending cuts. Meanwhile, Qualcomm was trading lower in sympathy with broader wireless and handset demand with fears over enterprise hardware sluggishness and smartphone demand bottlenecks. The chip pullback comes after a bruising week for Big Tech and AI stocks. Over the past week, investors became uneasy following earnings reports from Alphabet, Amazon and Meta Platforms, which fueled concerns about the payoff from AI-infrastructure spending. Alphabet's stock suffered its worst day on record Thursday, losing roughly $500 million in market value, after the tech giant said Google's search revenue growth waned due to the less lucrative nature of AI searches. Meanwhile, shares of Amazon were about 4.5% lower on Friday, after the company's third-quarter revenue and net income missed analysts' estimates. Overall free cash flow plunged to a $42.4 billion outflow. The reports came on the heels of Meta, which last week said it plans to continue spending "aggressively" on AI. The company unveiled plans to raise up to $95 billion in waves of stock offerings to fund its unending AI investments, including creating a new class of nonvoting stock in an at-the-market stock offering program of up to $60 billion. Meta's free cash flow also went into negative territory for the first time since it became a public company last week, although analysts had expected a stronger downturn. The company reported negative free cash flow of $2.1 billion versus analyst projections of negative $9.4 billion. Write to Connor Hart at connor.hart@wsj.com

Amazon, Intel Earnings Add Fuel to Tech Selloff — WSJ. By Ed Ballard The tech selloff is intensifying Friday morning after results from Amazon and Intel compounded worries around the artificial-intelligence trade. The Nasdaq composite slumped more than 2%. Shares of Amazon dropped; its earnings were in line with the company's forecasts--and showed booming cloud-computing growth--but left the market wanting more. Intel, meanwhile, is having its worst day ever after the memory-chip crunch and other hiccups weighed on personal-computer sales. The AI worry comes with a side order of crypto angst in the wake of a massive cyberattack on Binance. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are trading lower after hackers made off with an estimated $6.3 billion from an attack on the crypto exchange. Binance suspended transactions and said users will be made whole. Meanwhile, oil is up after more strikes in the Middle East and Russia. Brent crude is climbing after a tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz came under attack, according to U.K. Maritime Trade Operations. Ukraine struck an oil refinery in Russia, ending a pause that the Trump administration had pushed for. This item is part of a Wall Street Journal live coverage event.
