Fluence Energy Stock Drops on Leadership Overhaul — Barrons.com. By Laura Sanicola Fluence Energy stock fell 5.5% Monday after the energy storage company replaced its chief executive and chief financial officers following months of manufacturing problems that have forced repeated cuts to its financial forecasts. The company named Axel Meier, a longtime Siemens executive and Fluence board member, as interim CEO, replacing Julian Nebreda. Ricardo Roizen, formerly CFO of AES subsidiary AES Andes, will serve as interim finance chief, replacing Ahmed Pasha. Fluence said in a securities filing that it has begun searching for permanent replacements. Fluence makes large-scale battery systems that help utilities store electricity for use when demand is high or when renewable-power generation is low. The company buys battery cells and other components from suppliers and integrates them into finished systems, a business that operates on thin margins and leaves little room for project delays or unexpected costs. The stock has been highly volatile as investors have alternated between enthusiasm for the growing need for energy storage, particularly from data centers, and disappointment over Fluence's financial performance. Shares are down about 76% this year as international project-cost overruns have squeezed margins and more-recent manufacturing problems have delayed deliveries and undermined the company's financial outlook. Fluence's latest setbacks have centered on a Houston facility where problems with an automated welding process severely constrained production of its systems earlier this year. Fluence expected the plant to produce 11 storage units a day in August and September, but it managed just one a day in August and roughly three a day in the first half of September, the company disclosed that month. In September, Fluence cut its fiscal-2026 revenue forecast by $600 million, to approximately $2.4 billion, and projected a $200 million loss of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (Ebitda), compared with a previously expected $10 million Ebitda loss. The revenue reduction included roughly $450 million in delayed production and $65 million in penalties, largely associated with late deliveries. The problems have emerged despite strong demand for energy storage. Fluence reported a record $6.4 billion backlog in its fiscal third quarter, reflecting substantial orders that it has yet to turn into revenue. Monday's management shakeup extended beyond the CEO and CFO. Fluence also named Marco Boos, an executive with experience at Siemens and ABB, as chief customer success officer, replacing company co-founder John Zahurancik. It also established a new board committee to oversee manufacturing and operations. The changes come weeks before Fluence is set to report fiscal fourth-quarter results, on Nov. 23. The company did not reiterate its fiscal-2026 financial guidance Monday and said it would provide fiscal-2027 guidance at a later date. Citi analysts said the breadth of the management changes suggests Fluence's operational problems remain unresolved, although they view the management changes as a necessary step toward recovery. Apple Is Big Tech's Safe Haven — but Has Its Price Tag Become Too Steep. Apple Inc. AAPL heads into Monday’s fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report with Wall Street divided over whether its modest AI spending and strong cash flow make it Big Tech’s safest bet — or whether investors are paying too steep a price for that protection. The iPhone maker is scheduled to report results after the U.S. market close on Nov. 2, with analysts expecting revenue of $113.39 billion and earnings of $1.99 per share. Needham’s Martin Flags China, Memory Costs and iPhone Dependence Needham analyst Laura Martin , who has a Hold rating on Apple, said the company is benefiting from its relatively light AI capital spending, strong free cash flow and continued shareholder returns. Ahead of earnings, Martin told CNBC on Monday that she expected about $56 billion in iPhone revenue and roughly $31 billion in Services revenue, with Services carrying about a 75% margin. However, she expected about 300 basis points of overall margin compression, citing sharply higher memory costs. Martin said investors should watch whether new CEO John Ternus raises iPhone prices or absorbs the cost pressure, which could slow EPS growth over time. She also highlighted Apple’s 2.5 billion installed devices as a major competitive moat, but said Alphabet Inc. GOOG GOOGL Google, Meta Platforms, Inc. META and other AI players are trying to shift computing away from smartphones toward devices such as glasses. Martin said the iPhone remains Apple’s anchor product and noted that roughly half of total revenue comes from it. She also identified China, which represents about 20% of iPhone sales, as an important risk to monitor. Bernstein’s Newman Sees a Tech Safe Haven Bernstein analyst Mark Newman told CNBC on Saturday that Apple has become a defensive safe haven within technology because it is not committing the roughly $100 billion-plus in annual AI capex that some peers are spending. Newman pointed to Apple’s roughly $13 billion in capex last year and about $11 billion this year, along with growing earnings, free cash flow and continued share repurchases. He said Apple therefore carries less downside exposure if the broader AI investment cycle weakens. Newman also argued that Apple remains a key consumer gateway to AI because users are likely to access AI primarily through their phones. He believes smartphones will remain relevant even as wearables develop because those devices still need processing power, battery capacity and a tethered computing platform. Moffett Says Valuation Looks Stretched MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett also acknowledged Apple’s defensive appeal but said investors may already be paying too much for that safety. Moffett told CNBC on Saturday that Apple trades at about 36 times forward earnings, implying an earnings yield of roughly 2.8%, which he viewed as a demanding valuation. He also flagged rising memory costs as a potential pressure point. Moffett said Apple has already increased base-device prices by about $100, while U.S. wireless carriers have remained disciplined with promotions. He believes Apple’s biggest competitive threat is not necessarily Android, but customers keeping their existing iPhones longer. Higher prices could encourage consumers to delay upgrades by several months, creating a headwind for future device demand. What to Watch For in Apple Earnings Today — WSJ. By Rolfe Winkler Today is John Ternus's first earnings call as Apple CEO, and the company heads into the quarter with a high valuation considering its mediocre earnings growth rate. In other words: expectations are big. Here's what to watch for. Memory and storage costs. The prices of DRAM and NAND, two key components inside every iPhone, iPad and Mac, have quintupled since last summer. AI hyperscalers need the components inside the servers running their models and they're paying through the nose to secure supply. Apple has already warned markets that its own costs will jump as a result. But how much? Some analysts have warned that cost expectations don't fully reflect how hard this will hit Apple's bottom line. Duo availability. Apple fans are scooping up Apple's new foldable iPhone, mixed reviews be damned. The trouble is Apple can't make them fast enough, leading to ship dates out to January. And then there's "crackgate"-the small number of Duos whose screens are cracking soon after buyers unbox them. Expect supply chain updates for how Apple is fixing these issues. Staggered launch and price increases. Apple made big changes to its iPhone launch schedule in the September quarter. It didn't release a base model iPhone 18, just the Pro and Pro Max. And it raised prices across the board. How did consumers react? That determines whether Apple meets expectations. Ternus speaks. Expectations are high for the mechanical engineer who is suddenly one of the highest-profile CEOs. Apple is trading at 36 times next year's expected profits even though its earnings are only expected to grow about 1%, estimates Oppenheimer analyst Martin Yang. Ternus has said very little about what direction he intends to take the company. Monday is his biggest opportunity to date to articulate his vision. AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) Achieves Ground-to-Satellite Network Handoff. AT&T and AST SpaceMobile report what they believe is the industry’s first successful handoff between a ground-based cellular network and a direct-to-device satellite network. Beta services under real-world conditions are expected in the next phase. Material Details # Detail AI Analyst View 1 Completed ground-to-satellite network handoff Demonstrates a technical integration milestone for the planned satellite-to-mobile service. 2 Beta services under real-world conditions expected next Further performance testing is needed before the companies can progress toward commercial service. 3 Service designed to complement AT&T's network The stated role is to extend connectivity in remote and hard-to-reach areas, not replace terrestrial coverage. Context by AI Analyst This is a technical milestone in AST SpaceMobile's development of satellite connectivity integrated with a mobile network, following earlier voice, text and video calls through BlueBird satellites. Real-world beta testing and progress toward commercial service would be the next milestones to watch. Based on the original press release from AST SpaceMobile distributed by BusinessWire.
AT&T and AST SpaceMobile: Engineering the Connected World, One Handoff at a Time. AT&T and AST SpaceMobile, with supporting ground-based technology from Ericsson and Nokia, have achieved what we believe is the industry’s first successful handoff between a ground-based cellular network and a direct-to-device satellite network. This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20261102256625/en/ Your phone should just stay connected. Currently, moving between ground and satellite coverage can mean a dropped call or interrupted connection. The companies are engineering a seamless experience where the network does the work behind the scenes, helping you stay connected in more places. The milestone occurred Wednesday, October 21, 2026, outside Granite Falls, Washington, at 8:15 a.m. PT. It builds on previous voice calls, text messages and video calls through AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird satellites using everyday smartphones. This time, the companies tackled a different challenge: moving a connection between AT&T’s ground-based wireless network and AST SpaceMobile’s satellite network seamlessly. That’s why collaboration matters: AT&T provides America’s strongest nationwide wireless network. AST SpaceMobile provides the satellite network designed to connect directly with everyday smartphones. Ericsson provides AT&T the combined radio and core technology with intelligent network automation to optimize handoffs between ground-based and satellite networks—reducing transition times from seconds to milliseconds, so customers, first responders, and other essential workers stay connected. Nokia provides the radio access technology and mobility software that power AST SpaceMobile’s space-based network enabling seamless handover, service continuity and a smooth customer experience as users move between terrestrial networks and satellite coverage. ”Building on the strength of AT&T’s terrestrial network, AST SpaceMobile satellite connectivity is designed to complement and extend, not replace, the network by extending service to remote and hard-to-reach areas, keeping customers stay connected as wherever they live, work and travel. This successful handoff advances the integration needed to deliver that experience, with terrestrial and satellite networks working together behind the scenes. For customers, the experience should be simple: staying connected without having to think about the technology behind it. Advancing Toward Beta “The successful handoff is a significant milestone, but it’s not the finish line. The next phase is expected to include beta services under real-world conditions, allowing the companies to further refine performance,” says Robert Walters, SVP Network, AT&T. “The broader objective is to progress ultimately to commercial service.” “Together with AT&T we are making cellular broadband coverage from space a seamless part of the mobile network people use every day,” says Wayne Thorsen, Chief Commercial Officer, AST SpaceMobile. “Our space-based network, powered by our BlueBird satellites, with the largest communication arrays ever deployed in low Earth orbit is designed to give people more places to make calls, use their apps, stream content and stay connected with the smartphones they already own. It also adds a new layer of resilience for first responders who depend on reliable communications when it matters most.” As AT&T moves toward beta and commercial service, the focus remains on extending connectivity farther and making it simpler for customers. You can watch the video of the event (here). About AT&T We help more than 100 million U.S. families, friends and neighbors, plus nearly 2.5 million businesses, connect to greater possibility. William Blair analyst Sebastien Naji noted that the iShares Semiconductor ETF SOXX lost 17% in October, and it's down 28% from its high in June. "The shift in sentiment is understandable given the group's strong run to record highs earlier this year and lingering questions about AI monetization, the ability to fund the buildout and a rising cost of capital," Naji said in a note to clients. But in other ways, the selloff has been "indiscriminate," opening up "a meaningful gap between price and fundamentals" for some stocks, he added. One of those is flash-controller maker Silicon Motion Technology (SIMO), whose shares have fallen 26.1% over the past month. Demand has soared for its chips, which manage the movement of data between devices such as servers with NAND flash memory. Naji also sees "a compelling risk/reward" for Credo Technology Group Holding (CRDO), which sells high-speed connectivity components to move data in AI data centers. The stock has fallen 29% in a month and has only gained 5% so far this year. Additionally, Naji noted "long-term compounders" Arista Networks (ANET) and Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR), which "have pulled back to increasingly attractive levels." Both stocks have a history of outperforming the market and exposure to customers outside of the AI data-center buildout, he said. Arista, which provides switches and routers for AI data-center networking, has fallen 18.4% in a month, but is up 29% on the year. Power-management maker Monolithic also saw its shares fall about 18.1% over a month, but they're still up 33.7% so far this year. Altogether, Amazon.com (AMZN), Google (GOOGL) (GOOG), Meta Platforms (META) and Microsoft (MSFT) are planning to put $202 billion toward capital expenditures this year, which is up 79% from a year ago, Naji observed. That figure represents spending on assets such as chips and networking that are meant to provide value over the long term. While none of the hyperscaler cloud companies shared spending figures for next year, "all four signaled that spending will continue to rise," the analyst said, and Wall Street is eyeing potentially more than $1 trillion in capex for the group. Meanwhile, as shares of cloud-infrastructure software makers sold off last week, Bernstein analyst Peter Weed noted that Cloudflare (NET) and Datadog (DDOG) have a "unique" driver behind them that could set them apart from peers "and allow them to emerge as still-accelerating infrastructure names." For Datadog, he estimates its cohort of AI-native customers have added about $200 million more in annual recurring revenue for the third quarter than he had expected. Meanwhile, Cloudflare Workers, which allows developers to run code on the company's global network instead of through traditional data-center servers, may have seen annual recurring revenue triple in the third quarter, to $500 million, from the fourth quarter of last year. That led Weed to model sequential growth of 25% in the fourth quarter of this year. While there could be weakness in the fourth quarter compared to the previous year, Weed said the setup in the quarter "could allow a strong initial" outlook for Cloudflare's first quarter of next year, and the potential for more than 40% growth in 2027. -Britney Nguyen This content was created by MarketWatch, which is operated by Dow Jones & Co.
